First Look – 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty Tremor

Off-Road Package Brings Larger Tires, Lift Kit, and Unique Differentials to Big Truck

Jun 27, 2019
The 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty lineup is expanding for 2020 thanks to the addition of the already announced 7.3L gasoline V-8, the updated 6.7L Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8, and the TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission. But keen to capitalize on every kind of fullsize truck buyer, Ford will also offer the truck with a new off-road package: Meet the Super Duty Tremor.
The impetus behind the functional and cosmetic Tremor Off-Road Package is the fact that 70 percent of fullsize truck customers accessorize their trucks, and 15 percent of Super Duty owners remove and replace their wheels and tires within the first six months, often adding lifted suspensions to the setup as well. Ford thought to bypass that inconvenience by offering the truck an owner wants, right off the showroom floor (Chevrolet has done similarly with its Midnight Edition vehicles).

The Super Duty Tremor is available on the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels, in either F-250 or F-350 grades. Furthermore, unlike the Ram Power Wagon, the Super Duty Tremor can be had as either a 7.3L gas or a 6.7L diesel pickup—Ram relegates the PW package to the 6.4L Hemi only.
Tremor-Appropriate Content
The Super Duty Tremor starts off with a slight lift over stock, about 2 inches up front and slightly less in the rear. That raise also necessitates revised front-end suspension geometry, and progressive-rate springs help control the ride without sacrificing much in the way of payload or towing capacity. The rear stabilizer bar has been tuned with a lower spring rate, helping it flex more over obstacles.

Much larger shock absorbers all around come with added fluid capacity for greater performance under stress, but unfortunately, they're of the twin-tube design—monotubes would have been better. Some, including Ford, might say that the larger shocks are perfect for 98 percent of the kinds of trails a Super Duty owner might encounter, but nevertheless, monotubes should be standard on any semi-serious off-road package.

Those suspension upgrades make room for unique 18-inch matte black wheels, wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires. The front air dam has also been shortened. The end result is a stellar 10.8 inches of ground clearance, best-in-class water fording depth of 33 inches, and approach/departure angles of 31.65 and 24.51 degrees, respectively. Those are solid numbers for any vehicle, much less a - or 1-ton truck.

Electronic Magic
Aiding traction are an electronic locking rear and a limited-slip front differential. The front diff sends power to the wheel with grip by selectively braking a wheel that's spinning free, helping both wheels keep equal footing on the ground. The FX4 package donates its skid plates, and the Tremor aids cabin access with high-clearance side steps that tuck closer to the bodywork than on other Super Duty trucks.
The Tremor also adds a unique rock-crawl mode to its drive-select switch. This alters the throttle and transmission mapping for greater sensitivity over large obstacles, helping preserve momentum and reduce the chances of damage or wheel slip. And the Tremor takes a page from the Ranger and the F-150 Raptor by including Trail Control low-speed cruise control.

Ford hasn't copped to pricing, power, or capability specifics for any configuration of the 2020 Super Duty, but it promises the nameplate's best-ever towing and hauling. And it says the Super Duty Tremor will be available when the rest of the lineup launches later this year, with better towing and hauling ratings than the aforementioned Ram Power Wagon. Although it likely gives up some off-road capability to the incredibly articulate Power Wagon, it should still be a well-balanced machine, allowing owners to head out to the desert or tow their toys up the trail without getting left behind.
