2020 Ford Super Duty: 475 Horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of Torque

And Tows Up to 37,000 Pounds

Sep 26, 2019
Ever since Ford announced the updated 2020 Super Duty and its updated, third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V-8, the question on everyone's minds is if it will be rated to tow more than the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty (35,000 pounds) and 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD (35,500 pounds). And after more than seven months of waiting, we finally received an answer at the 2019 State Fair of Texas. Hell yes, the 2020 Ford Super Duty will tow a lot more—up to 37,000 pounds properly equipped.
Towing Trade Secrets
That rating applies to gooseneck towing with an F-450 Super Duty XL regular cab. The same machine should be capable of 32,500 pounds' worth of fifth-wheel towing and 24,200 pounds of bumper-pulled conventional towing, impressive numbers in their own right.

It's not just the medium-duty-in-drag F-450 Super Duty that can throw down massive towing numbers, however. A dual-rear-wheel F-350 kitted with the Power Stroke diesel engine can tow up to 35,750 pounds, a number that still eclipses the Ram Heavy Duty and the GM twins. A single-rear-wheel version of the same truck could be expected to haul up to 22,800 pounds. In addition to the towing crown, Ford can also lay claim to a best-in-class available payload rating of 7,850 pounds, a number achieved by a dual-rear-wheel F-350 Super Duty equipped with the standard 6.2L gasoline V-8.
Powerhouse
The key to those impressive towing numbers is the third-generation Power Stroke turbodiesel engine found in the 2020 Ford Super Duty, which will make a stellar 475 hp at 2,800 rpm and 1,050 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm (numbers that are—wait for it—best-in-class). Ford is quick to point out that all 6.7L Power Strokes will have that rating, an obvious dig at the Ram Heavy Duty, whose Cummins I-6 is available in two states of tune (850 lb-ft and 1,000 lb-ft), depending on transmission choice.

The 2020 Ford Super Duty also boasts segment-best gasoline power and torque, 430 hp at 5,500 rpm and 475 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, as found in the all-new 7.3L V-8. The optional engine, whose displacement has us fondly remembering the very first Power Stroke diesel, will be available in every Super Duty configuration except the diesel-only F-450. It will boast a maximum conventional towing capacity of 21,000 pounds, going up to 21,200 pounds when using a fifth-wheel/gooseneck trailer.

A carryover 6.2L gasoline V-8 is also available (its lighter weight enabling a higher payload rating than the more powerful 7.3L). The 6.2 makes a useful 385 hp at 5,750 rpm and 430 lb-ft @3,800 rpm. Both gasoline engines are E85-capable.
Standard on the diesel and 7.3L gasser (and optional on the 6.2) will be an all-new TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission. Featuring a wider ratio spread than the six-speed it replaces and an available live-drive take-off unit on the driver's side, it will offer better performance and efficiency. It will also improve towing capacity over a comparable 2019 Super Duty.

Tremor Taskmaster
The Tremor Off-Road Package is a hard worker as well, and Ford is calling it the most capable off-road Super Duty ever. The Tremor will be available with the 6.7L turbodiesel V-8, giving it a maximum towing rating of 15,000 pounds for conventional trailers and 21,900 pounds for gooseneck trailers. The Tremor will also be available with the 7.3L V-8, giving it a maximum payload capacity of 4,210 pounds.

Those numbers compare very well to the gasoline-only Ram 2500 Power Wagon, which offers just 1,510 pounds of payload and 10,350 pounds of towing capacity. The Super Duty Tremor is comparable in terms of capability to the GMC Sierra HD AT4, which can tow up to 21,300 pounds and haul up to 4,398 pounds. (It must also be said that the Power Wagon could likely trounce either of those trucks on a rocky, challenging off-road course since it has articulation and ground clearance that rival purpose-built off-road buggies.)

Equipped for Safety and Convenience
As we've reported before, the 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty will come with even more towing and active safety technology than before. XLT trims and above will receive lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring with trailer coverage, and pre-collision monitoring and automated emergency braking. Furthermore, the Super Duty will now be available with Pro Trailer Backup Assist, a feature first seen on the F-150 that takes a lot of the guesswork out of reversing into a storage space or down a crowded boat ramp. Also available is Trailer Reverse Guidance, which shows trailer angle and direction and provides suggestions to safely and precisely maneuver a trailer back.
Coming Soon to a Theater Near You
The 2020 Ford Super Duty will arrive at dealers by the end of the year, built at the company's truck plants in Louisville, Kentucky, and Avon Lake, Ohio. Pricing has yet to be announced, but we doubt it'll be cheap, particularly in diesel-powered variants. Hey, great engineering has its price.
