Chevrolet Applies Miniscule Changes to 2021 Colorado ZR2

Slight Updates to Front Fascia Hide… No Mechanical Changes

In what could be the world's most skin-deep midcycle update, Chevrolet will give the 2021 Colorado ZR2 small facelift. The public will get its first look at the newish Colorado this weekend, when the ZR2 race truck campaigned by Hall Racing makes its debut at the 2019 Method Race Wheels Laughlin Desert Classic on October 10. The production-intent Colorado ZR2 will make its first public appearance at the 2019 SEMA Show next month.

Alterations to the 2021 Colorado ZR2 include a totally revised front fascia with a flow-through grille featuring "CHEVROLET" script across the middle and a small bow tie emblem in the corner. The new front end also features a unique split-wing grille design that looks like it was inspired by the modern and controversial 2019 Silverado 1500 Trail Boss. Up front, the new ZR2 now gets red-painted tow hooks, another nod to the Trail Boss. For what it's worth, Chevy claims the cosmetic changes improve visibility for ZR2 owners, so that's good.

There will be some cosmetic changes among the volume-selling Colorado trims as well. The WT, LT, and Z71 get updated grilles, lower fascias, and front skidplates, and the company claims more differentiation among each 2021 Colorado trim. To wit, the WT and LT get gold-painted bow tie emblems up front, the Z71 a black bow tie, and the ZR2 a flow-through script logo.

Shared among all 2021 Colorado models is a new tailgate that does away with the center-mounted bow tie emblem in favor of a stamped "CHEVROLET" logo. Again, this alteration seems to be inspired by the all-new Silverado—it's possible Chevy is phasing out the bow tie among pickups like Ram did with its former crosshairs grille.

Although the Colorado is still very class-competitive when it comes to mechanical specs and interior appointments, we're a little disappointed Chevrolet only made cosmetic changes to the 2021 truck. For that, we'll likely have to wait until an all-new Colorado shows up for 2023 or 2024.
