Truck Trend's experts were immediately captivated by the luxurious nature, powerful performance, and formidable capability of the Ford F-250 Super Duty Limited. Our appreciation for the truck starts in the engine room, where a third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 that produces a segment-leading 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft is found. Mated to this engine is an all-new, heavy-duty TorqShift 10-speed automatic.
The Ford F-250 Super Duty Limited has far and away one of the most luxurious interiors on the road, pickup or not. The Limited features adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and lane-departure prevention, blind spot monitoring with trailer coverage, and automated emergency braking, all of which eased stress on long drives. What's more, the truck also boasts a B&O Play Premium Sound System from Bang & Olufsen, which when combined with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto meant we could rock out to the world's library of music, delivered with crystal-clear fidelity. It's possible that Ford builds the best audio system of any modern pickup.

Like last year's winner, the 2019 Ram 1500, there's a Super Duty for everyone. We loved the lusty exhaust note and off-road performance of the F-250 Tremor and its 7.3L gas V-8. Fleet customers who stick with the base 6.2L V-8 nonetheless benefit from the Super Duty's excellent and hard-working basic bones. Customers who opt for a well-equipped XLT FX4 will get a fun and reasonably priced daily driver. And long-haulers who regularly tow in excess of 30,000 pounds will appreciate the F-450 and its groundswell of responsive power.
But in this test, it was the 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty Limited that took the prize, winning us over with its combination of hard-working diesel torque, excellent city and highway driving dynamics, competent off-road chops, and class-competitive or class-leading interior quality.

Full drive impressions of the 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty are embargoed and will be released on TruckTrend.com on January 21st, 2020.
"The 2020 Ford F-250 Limited offers a staggering level of capability that doesn't result in a kidney-punishing freeway ride," says TRUCK TREND Staff Editor Brett T. Evans. "While I tend toward smaller pickups, the Super Duty nevertheless won me over thanks to its excellent drivability in almost every traffic situation. Its brilliant optional Power Stroke diesel only adds to its appeal, whether rock crawling, hot-rodding, or towing a trailer. Its revised styling is also aging very gracefully, with a crisp appearance and large greenhouse that also aids outward visibility."
Ford's F-250 Super Duty won Truck Trend's 2020 Pickup Truck of the Year award only after completing a demanding weeklong test comprised of more than 1,000 miles of performance testing, hauling, towing, fuel economy calculation, and off-roading—all important disciplines in which truck owners expect their vehicle to be competent.

To thoroughly test each truck, the competition began with a day of instrumented testing at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The field was subjected to 0-60-mph and quarter-mile acceleration testing as well as 60-0-mph braking while unladen. Each truck was then loaded up with its maximum payload and retested from 0-60, for quarter-mile elapsed time, and 60-0 braking. The final instrumented test involved each truck accelerating from 0-60 mph and through a quarter-mile while towing a trailer specifically weighted to each class, 10,000 pounds for the -ton class.
Using the same parameters as the instrumented testing, the trucks were again loaded up with a trailer and driven on a 12-mile loop up and down the infamous Cajon Pass in Southern California. The Cajon pass features an impressive 6-percent grade, which tested each pickup to the max. Throughout the day, experts and trailers rotated through the group, allowing our judges to evaluate every vehicle with a loaded trailer driving both up and down the grade. This also allowed testers to experience how easy each truck was to hitch a trailer to, effectiveness of integrated trailer brake controllers, how well the trucks were designed with outward visibility in mind, and chassis performance, among other features important to truck buyers.

With load testing complete, the vehicles were pointed north for a 300-mile highway slog up the California coast designed to test real-world fuel efficiency. Our convoy drove at the stated speed limit in a lead-follow formation, rotating both drivers and vehicle positions at designated intervals. This method produced the most accurate representation of real-world highway fuel economy possible.
Finally, the vehicles headed to California's Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, where the field completed extensive off-highway testing over miles of diverse terrain. Through rough, graded roads, rocky climbs, tight trails, and sandy washes, judges were able to evaluate tires, gearing, traction aids, electronic traction controls, ground clearance, suspension tuning, four-wheel-drive systems, thermal management, and overall vehicle dynamics.

Over the course of the 1,000-mile test the experts had ample time with each vehicle to form qualified opinions regarding important factors such as interior ergonomics, seat comfort, technology usability, build quality, and features and benefits of each truck, while also logging fuel usage to gauge real-world economy through the course of diverse usage.
With testing completed, the staff at Truck Trend crunched the data and found that the Ford F-250 Super Duty Limited dominated the field, leading the combined scoring in four out of seven scoring categories: Highway (15%), Towing and Hauling (15%), Interior (10%), and Functionality (15%).
In the end, it was the Ford F-250 Super Duty Limited that scored the highest number of points and earned the nod from Truck Trend's judges.
"Since Ford's introduction of the current generation of Super Duty pickup for the 2017 model year the company has done anything but rest on its laurels," says Truck Trend Editor Jason Gonderman. "Now, with updated exterior styling, a class-leading 6.7L Power Stroke diesel V-8 engine that churns out 1,050 lb-ft of torque, and the most luxurious interior of any pickup on the road, Ford's Super Duty embodies all of the traits pickup buyers are looking for."
