Chevy Colorado Makes 720hp with LT4 V8 Swap

Lingenfelter Performance Makes Big Numbers on the Dyno

Apr 1, 2020
Any time we hear about a midsize truck making over 700HP—which is just about never—we make sure we get intel and let you know all about it. Recently, we heard about a Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 with a supercharged LT4 V8 swap and wanted to get down to the bottom of it.

As you've probably heard, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes well-equipped out of the box, making it a worthy competitor of the other brands' off-road packages. The standard Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes with the naturally aspirated 3.6L LGZ V6, which makes 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, and it is definitely no slouch for a midsize pickup. But even with those impressive numbers, someone decided that their ZR2 Colorado was going under the knife, and an LT4 V8 engine and eight-speed transmission were going to be shoehorned in place. A trip to Lingenfelter Performance Engineering would follow and push the envelope even further.

The supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 is the crowd favorite that you'll find in the Corvette Z06, Camaro ZL1, and Cadillac CTS-V. Factory horsepower and torque numbers are both about 650, which is a pretty big number to be throwing around in the first place. But as soon as the swap was complete, the LT4 received Lingenfelter's 720-horsepower upgrade kit, which includes an upgraded supercharger pulley, air filter, spark plugs, and a custom tune. The Colorado ZR2 also received proper calibration for the eight-speed automatic.
Instead of completely speculating on our own, we went straight to the source and asked Lingenfelter VP Mark Rapson for his take. "The truck, which was originally swapped by Current Performance, is very cool, a little over the top for the average guy, but when it came in for our 720HP Package and custom calibration we figured it would get attention to promote our recent activity in the midsize truck market," Rapson said. "We've put a lot of R&D resource into the mid-size Chevy truck platform with our new supercharger package for the V6 version. That package gives V8 power without requiring a swap and is incredible for off-roading, towing, or as a daily driver without adversely effecting fuel mileage."

We used the aforementioned term "shoehorned" in jest because the install looks damn-near factory, which is impressive for a big-time swap like this. Recorded on video for posterity, the fire-breathing Colorado laid down 534 horsepower and 526 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels.
Even though this whole ordeal is pretty awesome, and we hope to see more supercharged truck swaps, this might be a tad out of most peoples reach. For the rest of us, Lingenfelter offers the '17-'20 Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon 3.6L HFV6 TVS Supercharger 450 HP Package that will definitely move these midsized trucks down the road.
