2015 Chevy Colorado Spied with Less Camo

The upcoming 2015 Chevrolet Colorado small pickup inches closer to production, and drops some of its disguise along the way.

Oct 7, 2013
There's a dearth of options for small-truck shoppers, and GM isn't letting that opportunity pass it by. A new small truck is on the way, in the form of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, and its inevitable stablemate, the 2015 GMC Canyon. We've seen both before, but today we get our clearest look yet at the upcoming small truck as its engineers use less camouflage to conceal it...and some of it just plain falls off.
While there is a small truck called "Colorado" on sale in Asia and elsewhere, the U.S. version is shaping up to bear little resemblance to that pickup. Instead, what we see peeking out from under the black canvas is more like a shrunken version of the full-size 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra that recently debuted. The grille is more prominent, and fully chromed. The headlights have a more truck-like appearance, eschewing the Malibu-like styling of the Asian version. The profile is also much closer to what we traditional expect from our trucks. However, it does appear as though the nose of the new Colorado will have softer curves than its blunt-looking bigger brother. As for the dropped camo? It's in back, where it apparently peeled away from the tailgate, revealing...an expanse of white tailgate with a handle in the middle. Was that really worth disguising?
There's still no word on what will power the new truck, although it's a sure bet that the all-diesel engine selection from the Asian version won't make it to the U.S. Instead, it's likely we'll get a V-6 of some sort as the top-line engine, likely a permutation of the 3.6-liter V-6 that seems to be in every GM product these days. As for the base engine, it's likely to be a four-cylinder; maybe the 2.0-liter turbocharged version we've seen in recent Cadillacs, but more likely to be the 2.5-liter engine found in the Malibu. On the other hand, there's the 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel on sale now, so it's possible a small diesel could make it to the U.S. Colorado. Whatever winds up under the Colorado's hood, we'll likely get a better look at it soon as development finishes up, with a full debut likely sometime early next year, possibly at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
