2015 Ford F-150 Claimed to be "Most Patented" Truck in Company History
More than 100 Patents Filed for New Truck
There's no doubt the 2015 Ford F-150 is an innovator in the fullsize truck segment, with its aluminum body, a new, smaller EcoBoost V-6 coming next year, and extensive use of LED lighting. But according to Ford, it's also the most-patented truck in the company's history. More than 100 patents were filed for the new truck, among them a new heat-treating process to increase strength on the aluminum body panels.
Ford also pointed out many of the 2015 F-150's convenience features, including side LED lights for illuminating the side of the truck for a tire change or setting up a campsite, an available 360-degree–view camera, and segment-first factory-equipped accessory cargo ramps. The 2015 F-150 is also the first truck to offer an available remote-opening tailgate. Ford did not specify if these convenience features were among the patented items.
Fullsize trucks are of paramount importance to domestic auto manufacturers, accounting for more than half the profit of the companies by some estimates. The F-Series has been the best-selling vehicle for the brand and the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for more than three consecutive decades; an accolade Ford is certainly hoping to retain in the years ahead.
