2021 Ford F-150 Tows 14,000 Pounds, PowerBoost Hybrid Makes 570 lb-ft of Torque

Ford Claims Best-in-Class Payload, Towing, and Torque.

Sep 29, 2020
Ford announced today that the all-new 2021 will carry with it the claims of best-in-class towing, payload, and torque. Maximum towing has increased by 800 pounds over the outgoing model to a staggering 14,000 pounds. Maximum payload has increased by 55 pounds to 3,325, which is more than 1,000 pounds greater than Ford's closest competitor. Power and torque have been increased across nearly the entire lineup, with the new PowerBoost hybrid producing 570 lb-ft of torque.

Best-in-Class Torque

Going into 2020, Ford already had claim to the title of best-in-class torque with the high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 engine, which produced 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Now, for 2021, the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid V-6 takes that quite a bit further by producing a combined 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque.
That's not the only news either, as Ford has also increased power output of the standard 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 and the 5.0L V-8. The 3.5L EcoBoost bumps up 25 hp and
30 lb-ft to 400 hp and 500 lb-ft, while the 5.0L V-8 bumps up 5 hp and 10 lb-ft to 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.
Output remains the same for the 3.3L V-6, 2.7L EcoBoost V-6 and 3.0L Power Stroke diesel V-6. No mention of the former high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 found in 2020 Limited and Raptor models was made, likely meaning we'll have to wait for the forthcoming 2021 F-150 Raptor announcement for that engine's specs.

Best-in-Class Payload

Ford already had a solid grasp on best-in-class half-ton payload for 2020 with a maximum of 3,270 pounds. For 2021, that figure increases by 55 pounds to 3,325. The truck needed to accomplish this is a base model, two-wheel-drive, single-cab, long bed equipped with the 5.0L V-8 engine. For 2021, a similar extended-cab truck can haul 3,010 pounds, while a crew-cab can handle 2,900 pounds. The PowerBoost hybrid F-150 boasts a maximum payload of 2,120 pounds, which is also best for full-size hybrid pickups (easy when you're the only player).

Best-in-Class Towing

Ford briefly lost the crown for best-in-class half-ton towing to GM, but for 2021, it is poised to regain the title with an 800-pound bump in capability for the top towing performer. Unlike payload, which relies on a V-8 powered single-cab for its maximum ability, the top tower in Ford's lineup is a Super Crew equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6. For the first time, an extended cab model is also capable of 14,000 pounds of towing.
Interestingly, a 2021 F-150 in any cab configuration, when equipped with the 5.0L V-8, can tow 13,000 pounds. The 2.7L EcoBoost V-6's top towing of 10,100 pounds is achieved with a 4WD unit. The 3.0L Power Stroke diesel can tow up to 12,100 pounds, and the naturally aspirated 3.3L V-6 tops out at 8,200 pounds.
The 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid V-6, which is only available in SuperCrew trucks, will be rated to tow 12,700 pounds for two-wheel-drive trucks and 12,400 pounds for four-wheel drive models.
