2021 Ram 3500 Cummins Diesel Out-Tows and Out-Torques Ford F-450

Best-in-class towing, torque announced for certain diesel-powered Ram trucks.

Dec 2, 2020
Here we go, again! The horsepower, torque, and towing wars continue between General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles 1-ton pickup trucks powered by each manufacturers' turbo-diesel engine option: Duramax, Power Stroke, and Cummins, respectively. The Big 3 have proverbially gone at it for years now, flipping positions faster than horses on the final straightaway of the Kentucky Derby. Although it's become hard to keep track of who's on top, rest assured that in the real world, it doesn't really matter. All of the new heavy-duty trucks are truly badass and can crush itty bitty sedans entirely.
We're unapologetically suckers for the latest gossip regarding diesel pickup truck numbers, as the pissing match raises the bar for the whole segment—and that's a win-win for everyone. The latest news comes from the Ram camp and pertains to the max towing and torque figures for the 2021 Ram 3500.
The 2021 Ram 3500 max towing figure is now a mind-blowing 37,100 pounds (gooseneck). That's a 200-pound increase for Ram, making Ram the new best-in-class leader for max towing—ahead of even the Ford F-450's 37,000-pound rating. Ram's conventional towing for 2021 is 23,000 pounds. The Ram truck can tow copious portions of earth thanks to slight air and fuel modifications to the High-Output Cummins engine and a robust hitch design from Ram Engineering.
Working hand-in-hand with the 2021 Ram 3500's max towing increase is a bump in the torque figure for the High-Output Cummins powerplant, which goes from 1,000 lb-ft of torque to 1,075 lb-ft. That torque boost allows Ram to take the best-in-class torque figure, ousting Ford's 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The caveat is that the 1.075 lb-ft figure only applies to the High-Output Cummins that's exclusively available in the 3500. Ford's 1,050 lb-ft rating applies to all of its F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty Power Stroke-equipped trucks, whereas the Standard-Output Cummins engine produces 850 lb-ft of torque.
Also new to the 2021 Ram Heavy Duty lineup is a digital rearview mirror that displays real-time video from a rear-facing camera. It can be turned off when a traditional reflective mirror is preferred.
The High-Output 2021 Ram Heavy Duty should be available before the end of 2020.

How much can the 2021 Ram tow?

Max gooseneck towing:
  • 37,100 pounds: 2021 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty Regular Cab Long Bed, dual-rear-wheel, two-wheel-drive with High-Output Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-liter I-6 and 6-speed Aisin AS69RC transmission with 4.10:1 axle gears
Competition:
  • 37,000 pounds: 2021 Ford F-450 Super Duty Regular Cab, dual-rear wheels, two-wheel drive with Power Stroke turbo-diesel 6.7-liter V-8 and 10-speed TorqShift transmission with 4.30:1 axle gears
  • 36,000 pounds: 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD (or GMC Sierra 35000HD) Work Truck, Regular Cab, dual-rear wheels, two-wheel drive, Max Tow package with Duramax turbo-diesel 6.6-liter V-8 and 10-speed Allison transmission with 3.42:1 axle gears
  • 35,750 pounds: 2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty Regular Cab, dual-rear wheels, two-wheel drive with Power Stroke turbo-diesel 6.7-liter V-8 and 10-speed TorqShift transmission with 4.10:1 axle gears
Max towing continues to climb for the Chevy, GMC, Ram, and Ford heavy-duty truck lineup. It's important to note that these max towing numbers do not apply to every HD truck on the market. Rather, they apply to very specific configurations, meaning that trim, cab configuration, four-wheel drive, gearing, dual-rear wheels, wheel size, tow packages, and engine packages all impact how much a truck can tow. While a Ram may be able to tow 37,100 pounds, the Ram you buy more than likely isn't rated that high. And since maxing out today's new heavy-duty pickup trucks isn't going to happen for the average customer, it's safe to say that most configurations of any of these trucks will comfortably get the job done.

How much horsepower and torque does a 2021 Ram 2500 and 3500 truck's Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-liter I-6 have?

  • 400 hp/1,075 lb-ft of torque: 2021 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty with High-Output Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-liter I-6
  • 370 hp/850 lb-ft or torque: 2021 Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty with Standard-Output Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-liter I-6
