2022 GMC Hummer EV VIN 001 Hits Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale Auction Block

The first 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 joins the Ram 1500 TRX VIN 001 at the auction block.

Feb 1, 2021
GMC will bid farewell to its all-electric 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 VIN 001 during Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale Auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale, Arizona, which takes place from March 20-27, 2021. VIN 001 means that this sale is for the first retail production Hummer EV pickup that'll come off the production line at Plant Zero, GM's new dedicated electric vehicle plant (formally Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly).

Will the first production GMC Hummer EV, which was just introduced in October 2020, even exist by the time the March 2021 auction rolls around? No, but it'll still be auctioned off. A GMC Hummer EV show vehicle—just a display one—will represent VIN 001 at Barrett-Jackson. That's right, VIN 001 will be spoken for and purchased for presumably a handsome sum at least half a year before it exists. With production slated for fall 2021, we could see these halo GMCs in the wild before the end of the year. This thing's for real, unlike the Tesla Cybertruck, which Musk somehow actually envisions potentially delivering by the end of 2021—if lucky.

All proceeds from the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will benefit the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors fallen firefighter Stephen Siller and other first responders and military personnel. Barrett-Jackson has raised more than $127 million for charity. GM will also auction its first retail production 2020 mid-engined C8 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, with proceeds benefitting the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

If the concept of auctioning VIN 001 at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale sounds familiar, that's because Ram is doing the same thing with its 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition VIN 001. Which truck will bring in more when the hammer drops at Barrett-Jackson: the Ram TRX Launch Edition ($92,010) or the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 ($112,595, starting)? With the TRX sporting an insane supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 under the hood and the GMC Hummer EV ditching an engine altogether in favor of three electric motors, these trucks are essentially polar opposites. Yet both have, in their own ways, revitalized the truck industry. Just like the Hummer EV should theoretically spank the TRX performance-wise (gasp), will it likewise oust the TRX in the odd VIN 001 Barrett-Jackson showdown?
