First Look: 2023 Canoo Electric Pickup Truck

Upstart EV manufacturer enters the pickup arena with a futuristic light-duty workhorse.

Mar 17, 2021
Electric vehicles. More specifically, trucks, powered only by batteries; not gas, diesel, CNG, or any other fuels. There was a time not too long ago when a simple mention of EVs of any sort possibly becoming the world's primary mode of transportation was met with extreme ridicule.
The idea was, and occasionally still is, fiercely rebuked. "There's no way electric will preplace gas (or diesel) engines," was and still is a rallying cry of sorts, made by folks who just refuse to acknowledge the fact that battery-powered vehicles—currently just cars—are now legitimate players in the automotive game.
However, pickup trucks are also making their way into the EV space, with several new manufacturers now on the scene, developing light-duty rigs that are said to be as capable as their fuel-driven brethren, and of course, much more eco-efficient.

Torrance, California-based, Canoo Inc is one of these upstart companies (maker of the electricity-driven Multi-Purpose Delivery Vehicle (MPDV) and Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle), and it recently debuted a production version of its pickup offering.
Like the MPDV and Lifestyle, the new, light-duty truck is founded on Canoo's patented multi-purpose platform (184-inch length, 112.2-inch wheelbase), which is short by midsize-truck standards. It's powered by a single rear motor or a dual-motor setup that is capable of producing 600 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque, with a range of approximately 200 miles.
Unlike traditional EV platforms with power units, shock towers, mechanical steering columns, and other components that protrude into the vehicle and take up space, Canoo integrates the critical parts in its electric powertrain to be as flat and efficient as possible. This "thin" platform theoretically eliminates requiring an engine compartment.
The cab-forward rig is designed for utilitarian purposes (work, camping, etc. ). It's a two-seat extended cab, with a passenger compartment that is shifted forward to maximize visibility and space efficiency. A rear area accommodates two additional seats or can be configured for other uses.

The new Canoo electric pickup truck also features a modular 6-foot bed that extends to 8 feet. This unique cargo area includes fold-down work- and side tables and several storage compartments; and it's an access point to an optional roof rack. Canoo is also outfitting its pickup with exportable power that can be accessed from all sides, as well as overhead (third brake light) and bed lighting for increased visibility. For outdoor types and service people, the Canoo electric pickup accommodates a variety of camper shells.
Designers also added large fender spats, allowing the rig to support bigger wheels (18-inch are standard). And, in addition to the company's signature headlights and taillights, advanced lighting technology and bumper-incorporated foglamps provide additional visibility and adaptive safety.
"We are so passionate about building vehicles that can change people's lives," Tony Aquila, Canoo's executive chairman, says. "Our pickup truck is as strong as the toughest trucks out there and is designed to be exponentially more productive. This truck works for you."
A complete rundown of specifications will be revealed closer to production, which is slated for 2023. Until then, here is an abbreviated list of statistics (including dimensions data) about Canoo's all-new electric pickup truck.
