It’s Time to Binge Watch Top Gear!

Turn off Tiger King and watch something truly great!

Apr 22, 2020
I have been a big Top Gear fan for nearly as long as I can remember. If you have to ask what Top Gear is, I don't think we can be friends. And before we get too far off course, I'm talking about the original British version of the show that aired on the BBC (I did enjoy the Rutledge Wood and Tanner Foust version of Top Gear America, but you'll never get me to admit it in public). For the uninitiated, Top Gear is one of the most popular factual television series in the world. The show launched in its most famous format in 2002, and it has been running continuously for 27 seasons now.

Why is all of this important, you ask? Until recently, it was quite difficult to watch Top Gear in the United States. If you were fortunate enough to have a cable provider that carried BBC America, you could catch abbreviated versions of the program (cut down to allow for commercials), but the rest of us were left pretty much high and dry. Back in the Napster heyday, there was a fan site called FinalGear.com where high-quality bootlegs of the full BBC show airings were distributed. Since the statute of limitations is up (and the site is sadly gone), I can admit to downloading many seasons of the show to get my fix. Anyway, back to why this is important. MotorTrend now has every season of Top Gear, including the elusive first season, available to stream on the MotorTrend app. Every power lap, every star in a reasonably priced car, every Christmas special—all of it. I'm excited.
The MotorTrend app has about 180 episodes of Top Gear (seasons 1 through 25), 19 episodes of Extra Gear, 8 Best of Top Gear episodes, and 19 Top Gear specials. Pro Tip: If you don't sleep, you can almost watch all the Top Gear content within the app's 14-day free trial period. But a subscription is on sale right now (and it's normally only $4.99 a month to subscribe), so go ahead and get some rest.

Since we all seem to have more free time these days, I figured it might be fun to try and find my favorite episode. And you know what, I can't. There are just too many that are too good.
It would be far too easy to claim season 3, episodes 5 and 6 as the best. It's in these two that the trio of presenters proves the Toyota Hilux truly is indestructible. Or the best could be season 4, episode 2 when they put a nun in a monster truck. Really, who can forget season 9, episode 2 when they build a mock space shuttle out of a Reliant Robin. Season 14 brought us airport vehicle racing (episode 4) and the trio's custom electric SUV (episode 2). There was the ultimate snowplow in season 16 (episode 5) and the demolition challenge of season 17 (episode 5).
However, one of the last really great episodes was season 22, episode 6 (admittedly, I quit watching when Clarkson, Hammond, and May left the show). In this episode, Clarkson and May attempt to rescue Hammond from the wilds of Canada using a Ford Raptor and a Chevy Silverado. And not just any Raptor, but a Hennessey "Velociraptor."

I can watch the specials all day, too. The Burma special (episodes 8 and 9 in the MotorTrend app) is amazing, as the trio of hosts pilots dump trucks across the country. And we can't forget about the U.S. Roadtrip special (episode 10) in which they legitimately almost get killed by an angry mob in Alabama. But my favorite of all has to be the Polar special (episode 15), when they drive a specially prepared Toyota Hilux to the North Pole.
So, if you'll pardon me, I'm going to head back to my couch, fire up the Apple TV, and binge a few Top Gear specials on the MotorTrend app. Talking about it has got my Jeremy Clarkson withdrawals kicking hard. Be right back
