First Look – Facelifted 2021 Chevrolet Equinox
Hot-Selling Small SUV Gets Aggressive New Styling and an RS Model
Crossovers often blend into the background, but there's no denying their popularity. Helping keep the segment fresh is the facelifted 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, which applies a few styling and content changes to the company's bestselling SUV and second-bestselling vehicle overall.
Style for the Small SUV
The current Equinox is already a reasonably handsome, if inoffensive, small crossover, but the styling changes applied for 2021 make it a bit more distinctive. On the Premier and new-for-2021 RS trim levels seen here, the front fascia gets a grille bar that splits the front headlamps in two, with the upper element serving as an LED accent and the lower element doing high/low-beam duty. The front bumper now incorporates two large simulated air intakes and blade-shaped styling features that ape the polarizing Silverado 1500 somewhat. It's not clear if the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox boasts aerodynamics-enhancing air curtains like the Silverado.
Around back, the Equinox is largely similar to its pre-facelift predecessor. New taillights with a Corvette-inspired LED signature are the most obvious change, and the bumper styling has been smoothed and refined. Overall styling changes give the Equinox a more mature appearance, at least on the Premier and RS models Chevy showed off.
When comparing equivalent trim levels, interior changes are minimal, comprising a revised infotainment display and steering wheel design. The Equinox Premier also receives high-gloss black interior trim bits.
2021 Chevrolet Equinox RS
That said, the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox will be available in a new-to-nameplate RS trim. Like other Chevrolet models, the RS treatment is largely cosmetic, with a gloss black grille, black Chevy bowties and badging, black interior upholstery with snazzy red stitching, and a unique shift knob. The grille's texture is RS-specific, as are the standard 19-inch dark-finished wheels.
Don't expect any significant performance gains by selecting the Equinox RS. In fact, we're not even sure which of the little SUV's engines will power the sporty-looking trim level. The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox will be again be available with either the 1.5L turbocharged I-4 or the 2.0L turbocharged I-4. The former produces an adequate 170 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the latter's 252 hp and nine-speed auto make it a better fit for a sporty RS model.
The Equinox will again be available in L, LS, LT, and Premier trims, in addition to the RS. Like the 2020 model, the Equinox will again come standard with automatic emergency braking, lane departure prevention, and Intellibeam headlights. Chevy claims other safety features will be standard or available on a wider variety of trims. The SUV will be available this fall.
