Handing Off Our Pickup Truck of the Year Trophy to the Ford Super Duty - Chicago Auto Show

Feb 12, 2020

There's nothing like celebrating a job well done. The sentiment went both ways at the Chicago Auto Show, where Truck Trend Editor Jason Gonderman caught up with Ford representatives Brooke Ziomek and Emma Bergg to hand off our Pickup Truck of the Year trophy to the 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty.

Giving the Ford team a well-deserved win was gratifying for us as editors—capping off a long few months of hard work orchestrating the test—as well as fulfilling for those who worked so hard on the Super Duty to make it the excellent pickup it is today. Ziomek and Bergg were excited for the win, and it makes us happy that our stout 2020 trophy is finally with its rightful owners.

Strong Work from a Strong Truck

The 2020 Pickup Truck of the Year test was stacked with some excellent machines, including the F-Series Super Duty's cross-town rivals from Ram, Chevrolet, and GMC. Picking a winner wasn't easy, as each of the trucks offered their own unique strengths. But in the end, it was the 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty that took the nod, owing to its pleasant blend of power, refinement, luxury, and capability. Its new-this-year 6.7L Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 was a major crowd pleaser, boasting its segment's best 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft.

Its interior, although familiar, excelled as well (although we must admit some disappointment with the smallish center touchscreen—expect the next generation to remedy that). Sumptuous leather, genuine wood and aluminum trim, a kickin' stereo, and comfortable multicontour seats headlined our Limited tester's list of luxury features. Meanwhile, a suite of towing cameras, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and comprehensive active safety features made it a lot easier to work hard.

The 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty takes the win because it balances those tough-as-nails mechanicals with a comfortable and competent platform (as well as that stellar interior). But even the base F-250 XL Super Duty, optioned with the Power Stroke and its bundled 10-speed automatic gearbox, would likely have done well in our test. The whole Super Duty lineup offers plenty of capability without sacrificing good drivability in traffic.

What Will Next Year Bring?

The future is bright for new pickup trucks, with better materials, improved comfort, and plenty of power and torque to lead the way. But right now, the 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty is the truck to buy, and we're as proud of our award decision as the Blue Oval.
