Interior of All-New Flagship SUV Showcases Technology, Premium Materials
The Volvo XC90 was a big game-changer for the brand when it debuted in 2003, giving the iconic Swedish brand an entry into the then-new premium crossover market and a spiritual successor to the popular 740 and 940 wagons from the '80s and '90s. Volvo's financial issues over the past decade are no great secret, and one of the programs put on hold during that time was the next-generation XC90, giving the original model an epic 12-year model run. However, Volvo's SUV flagship is finally getting the attention it's due, with an all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 due for a full debut in August. But in the meantime, we're getting a sneak peek at the cabin of the new model, with a sleek, premium look befitting its Scandinavian heritage.
Central to the '15 XC90's new look is a large tablet-like touchscreen interface in the center console, which almost completely eliminates physical buttons on the dashboard, with the only manual control of note being a discreet small volume knob and play, forward, and reverse audio controls below it. Adding to the upscale ambience is Nappa leather, dark flame birch wood trim, an available Orrefors crystal gear lever, and a diamond-cut start/stop button and volume control knob.
Volvo is also touting improved interior room and comfort, with special attention paid to the second and third-row passengers. Optional "Contour" front seats offer optimized lateral support from shoulders to thighs. Despite being larger and roomier than its predecessor, the new XC90 will also have the smallest engine in its history, a 2.0L I-4. However, performance should be more than sufficient with an expected compound turbo-and-supercharged version making more than 300 hp and a an optional plug-in hybrid coming after its introduction.
