Larry Larson Runs 5.95 With His S10 - First Street Legal Car in the Fives Ever!
Racing Milestone at the Street Car Super Nationals
After becoming the world's quickest street legal vehicle at the end of Drag Week 2014 with a 6.16 second run, Larry Larson and his team were busy readying the truck for the Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas. Considering that their 6.16 run wasn't even a complete pass - the engine was faltering at the top end - it seemed that the truck definitely had 5-second potential. With their data acquisition working properly and the ignition gremlin discovered and fixed, the team was eager to get a full pass.
On Friday, the truck seemed ready to make a milestone 5-second pass coming close with a 6.05 in the morning and a 6.04 in the afternoon. The team took that data and programmed the boost curve to come on sooner and add a bit where they thought the truck could put the extra power to the track. On Saturday, the trucks' first run ended after a dramatic sideways launch. A small coolant leak had puddled in the engine catch pan and sloshed on the track at launch. At the next opportunity, Saturday afternoon, the car launched well, but sputtered near the 1/8-mile marker, running in the 6.50s.
On Sunday, all of the preparation lined up and the team's tune clicked during their first run of the morning with an improved 1.025 60-foot time that lead to a 5.950 at 244.43mph, the first-ever 5-second pass for a street legal vehicle!
