What Is a Million-Mile Truck Worth?

Priceless or Worthless?

Feb 11, 2020
Vehicles with more than a million miles are few and far between. That's why it was such a big deal when Nissan brought a 2007 Frontier with more than a million miles on the odometer to the 2020 Chicago Auto Show. During the show the company announced that they would be trading the owner a brand-new 2020 Frontier for his truck and would be moving it to a museum. While looking over the truck with a few of our media colleagues the question came up of what exactly is a pickup with this many miles worth?

Naturally, we piloted our smart phones over to Kelley Blue Book to find out. The truck is a 2007 Nissan Frontier King Cab in XE trim. It's two-wheel drive, has air conditioning (though it doesn't work), a CD player, cruise control, and alloy wheels. It does not have power windows or door locks. We would rate the truck as "Good" on Kelley Blue Book's scale because of its lack of dents and dings, but not "Excellent" because the interior is showing wear and the AC needs fixing.

Based on this KBB gives this truck a trade in value of $1,440. We'd be shocked if a dealer paid anything more than this for a truck with a million miles, so they seem pretty spot on. Selling private party is a much better option, with KBB saying the truck is worth between $3,171 and $5,024. However, they do say that it will be difficult to sell, requiring more than 30 days to finish the transaction.
For comparison we headed over to Edmunds to see how they would value the same truck. Edmunds is a little more optimistic on trade-in, valuing the truck at $2,547. Private party should bring in $3,865, which falls on the low end of KBB's estimated value. Edmunds also provides an estimated retail value, stating that you could expect to pay $6,065 for this truck on a dealer lot.

The reality is these trucks are priceless. If a pickup makes it to the seven-digit mark odds are the owner isn't selling, and no one in their right mind would buy it if they did. These trucks need to preserved for the future, or examined closely to improve future product. It's still fun to dream though!
