We've found out some interesting things so far in our '02 Jetta TDI experiment...

First, we found that the factory automatic wasn't long for this world after the 1.9L TDI engine was interfaced with a programmer. After making 93 hp and 147 lb-ft at the front wheels on the dyno at Randall's Performance, its life ended shortly thereafter. Then, with a five-speed manual gearbox swapped in and running the same tune, the car picked up 20hp and 71 lb-ft of torque! Once at the 113hp level the Jetta was definitely zippier to drive, but it was time to crank it up a little more...

However, once a set of Kerma TDI's DLC 1019 injectors went in, the clutch started slipping on the dyno. But, knowing what company manual transmission guys turn to day in and day out for their performance clutch needs, we contacted South Bend Clutch for a bulletproof replacement. With the HD-OFE clutch now installed, we'll soon find out what the injectors added to the horsepower equation. And then, it'll be time to upgrade turbos. We're hopeful that we can eclipse the 150hp mark with ease, and possibly scratch the surface of 180. Stay tuned for a full write up in the magazine!
