Outlaw Diesel Super Series Class Champions’ Roundtable
Class leaders weigh in with insights about the far-from-normal 2020 racing season.
Diesel Power has been linked with the Outlaw Diesel Super Series—North America's premiere diesel drag-racing sanction—for nearly five years, in a relationship that has grown from editor KJ Jones simply attending a few events, to the brand joining forces with ATS Diesel Performance in 2016, as a co-sponsor for the very popular 7.70 Index Eliminator.
As our partnership grew, providing readers and fans with photos, videos, and editorial reports on the results and highlights from ODSS events became a regular practice, thanks to KJ and John Lehenbauer, as well as Diesel Power contributors Chris Tobin, Adam Dobbs, Jason Sands, and Amy Gilbert.
Like many events and competitions in the diesel space and beyond, a global pandemic and the social restrictions it brought forth across the U.S. forced ODSS officials to cancel five of nine events on its 2020 schedule.
However, working with city officials in Lyons, Indiana, Crossville, Tennessee, and Holt, Florida, and the management and staff of Wagler Motorsports Park, Crossville Dragway, and Emerald Coast Dragway, race director Gregg Jolley put together an abbreviated season of three-and-a-half events that gave participants a chance to compete, and fans opportunities to get out of the house and (responsibly) check out the always exciting ODSS racing action. Considering the state of things, truck counts at all of the events were good, and ultimately, points chases came down to the final event (rain-shortened Suncoast Showdown at Emerald Coast) for some classes.
Unfortunately, travel limitations ordered by MotorTrend Group prevented us from attending the shows that were held and relegated our "coverage" to KJ noting highlights (wins, personal bests, records, etc.) during live posts on the Diesel Power Magazine Facebook page on Mondays following a race.
With the 2020 ODSS Awards Banquet also canceled, we put together the following Zoom chat with all of the class champions, a very casual and informal discussion that gave racers a platform to talk about the season and share their insights and hopes about the future.
In advance, we apologize for audio and video glitches (thanks to a camera issue, you will hear, but never see KJ on screen) in the Zoom recording, and we appreciate your indulgence and patience. Please listen to the discussion in its entirety, as the racers are very transparent with their comments.
