Van's Cavernous Capacity Demonstrated with Tiny Car

May 7, 2014
The 2015 Ford Transit is raising the bar on capacity and capability by offering up to 487 cubic feet of cargo space. That's enough to allow a 6-foot-tall person to stand upright in its interior—that's no great revelation. Instead, Ford wanted to show it's possible to drive a car into the back of the Transit, turn it around, and drive it back out. Sound impossible? It's not, but it does require a specific and very small car.
You may recognize the Peel P50 from the Top Gear (UK) episode in which Jeremy Clarkson drives the diminutive single-seater into the elevator and through the hallways of the BBC world headquarters in London. The tiny car was built and sold on the Isle of Man in Great Britain from 1962 to 1965. Entrepreneurs revived the Lilliputian runabout in 2011, and unlike the original models that did not have a reverse great, the modern-day revivals does, which comes in extremely handy in this particular publicity stunt, as you can see in the video.
Even if you don't own a Peel and don't plan on duplicating this stunt, it's an amusing, yet memorable demonstration of how generous the extended-length Ford Transit's 487 cubic feet is.
