There's no question that Chevrolet's Silverado HD powertrains were a big factor in its winning Truck of the Year honors. The new 8100 Vortec big block is just simply the largest and most powerful gasoline truck engine available in a light-duty truck. Allison's new-for-the-class five-speed automatic is a perfect teammate for either the 8100 or the 6600 Duramax turbodiesel and maintains GM's effective Tow/Haul mode. We like that engaging Tow/Haul also downshifts the trans for downhill duty, allowing a modicum of compression braking. High-tech stuff that works.
