Motor Trend 2004 Truck Of the Year Winner: Ford F-150

Model-Line Cheat Sheet cont....

F-150 XLT
(16 configurations)
The jack-of-all-trades XLT ($24,175 base) is available with both engines, all three cab lengths (including the full-size four-door SuperCrew), and 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains. SuperCabs' rear-hinged doors feature second-row power windows--not those electric pop-out jobs like on a minivan, but honest-to-goodness, roll-down-til-they-disappear panes. Also, SuperCab and SuperCrew are available with a power-sliding rear window. The XLT features Ford's new overhead-rail system, which accommodates various storage modules. The two brushed-aluminum rails with integral power supply allow owners to snap in additional modules, such as a first-aid kit, tool kit, two-way radio holder, and flashlight. Rear-seat DVD entertainment is optional.

F-150 FX4
(six configurations)
For serious off-roading, the $29,690 FX4 is the choice. Locomotion is courtesy of the 5.4-liter/4x4 drivetrain. It's available in all cab and bed configurations (except 8-foot bed). New 18-inch machined-aluminum wheels and gray, lower two-tone exterior paint are optional. Inside, the FX4 has unique accents on the instrument panel, center console, doors, and steering wheel. Carbon-mesh trim and chrome-ringed air vents on the console further differentiate the model. Optional captain's chairs are paired with a center console and handsome knurled-handle floor shifter.

F-150 Lariat
(six configurations)
The ultimate F-150 starts at $29,450, comes with the big V-8 in SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles, and with 5.5- or 6.5-foot beds. Two- or four-wheel drive is optional as are premium-leather dual-power heated captains chairs. Stitched surfaces and woodgrain touches on the doors and center stack complement the Lariat's unique parchment-color gauges ringed in chrome. Other special features include steering-wheel-mounted keys for audio and climate control, in-dash message center, automatic temperature control, power-adjustable memory seats and pedals. Near as we can figure, a full-boat Lariat with every option comes in at just over $41,000.

With 46 different chassis, cab, and bed configurations, the new F-Series is more than a truck; it's a family of trucks. From left to right: XLT, STX, Lariat, and FX4.
