One-Year Test Update: 2002 GMC Envoy

An SUV with impressive 'right-size' packaging

Photography by Brian Vance

After a few months in MT's Florida offices, our '02 Sport/ Utility of the Year winner made its second cross-country trek back to our Los Angeles headquarters. Before we left Gatorville, we had the 17,500 service performed (oil/lube/filter change, tires rotated, and fuel-injector service). The front-passenger seatbelt retractor was replaced under warranty, having developed a tendency to strangle passengers in locked mode. Total service cost: $126.31. Covering 2645 miles in three days, Editorial Assistant Brian Vance noted, "The trip computer is nifty for estimating how far you can go on a tank of gas; but below a certain amount of fuel, it goes into panic mode and won't let you scroll through the menus." Since our One-Year Test is coming to a close, we had an early 22,500-mile service (another oil/air/fuel filters change and tire rotation), for another $486.36 from our paychecks. The dealer also performed a fuel-filter disconnect recall under warranty.

"Every time I drive the Envoy, I'm impressed with its 'right-size' packaging."--Jeff Bartlett
