Long-Term Update: 2004 Ford F-150 4x4 SuperCrew

Truck love, it'll do that to you.

In the previous update, we mentioned the F-150's "abysmal throttle response" without knowledge of a problem. MT reader James Summers of Eagle, Idaho, sent us a note suggesting we have the dealer "reflash" the engine-management system's computer to correct the throttle-lag issue. At the 15,000-mile service, we did just that. Time will tell if it's corrected (we just got the truck back from the dealer), but it does feel punchier (and thanks to those of you who write in to offer solutions; we do listen). In addition to the regular oil/filter change service and inspections, we ordered a replacement grommet for the tailgate-bed extender. The top part of the shifter had come apart, requiring replacement of the entire shifter, so that was ordered, too. We'll take the F-150 back in as soon as the special-order parts arrive. In spite of these few broken bits, "the solid look is still best in class, and the F-150 handles and feels tough; materials and textures work together." Truck love, it'll do that to you.
