Average fuel econ 16.8 mpg
Unresolved problems Passenger-side rear backup sensor not functioning
Maintenance cost $0
Normal-wear cost $0

Seduced by the promise of a BMW sport sedan with SUV practicality, we ordered our X3 with sport suspension and seats. Handling impressions are favorable, notably on the occasions when we've flogged it on Angeles Crest, but ride quality and available cargo space for our daily chores remain disappointing. Logbook scribblers have carped about climbing into the thickly bolstered seats over the wide sills and programming the overly complex nav system. Think long and hard before checking the $1800 Sport Package box unless you spend most of your time on smooth, curvy roads.
