Long-Term Update: 2005 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner

Our long-term Tacoma hit the trail with Truck Trend chief Mark Williams at the helm. He discovered the rear locker helped out on a nasty, rutted off-camber trail, but not on a loose hillclimb. The lack of 4WD kept him from exploring a ridge trail that he wasn't sure he could get back up. Williams liked the double water-bottle holders in the doors and called the interior layout "the best use of door and console space around." The composite bed is holding up well; maybe we haven't abused it enough. We're impressed with the bed's 120-volt outlet and would like to see this handy feature on every truck.

This truck never sits. Another update, another service; this time, the 15K regimen. In addition to the Tacoma's scheduled maintenance, the service department checked out a persistent clunk from the driver-side front window.
When we took the 2005 Toyota Tacoma Pre-runner in for a 5000-mile service, the dealer checked a noise from the brake-pedal area.
The new Toyota Tacoma received an automatic invite to join our long-term-test fleet after capturing the 2005 Truck of the Year trophy.
