Since its reveal on Honda's Facebook page last summer, the Accord Crosstour has taken more than a little bit of flack for its, uh, interesting form. Just read some of the comments left on motortrend.com's first Crosstour image post:
"...I wish someone could take away my memory of ever having seen it."
"This is a joke, right?"
"LMAO!!! ROFL, it's so ugly and just wow."
Still, as testing director Kim Reynolds pointed out in our initial encounter with Honda's funky hatch, the Crosstour isn't at all horrendous in the flesh. Quite the contrary, really. In fact, its complex lines are admirable and, yes, after a while, they'll grow on you.
Within its controversial metal shell resides a highly useful, smooth-driving, four-door that's part SUV, part roomy sedan. It's so intriguing that we called Honda and asked for a long-term EX-L 4WD, which, after a few short months, arrived with nearly every Honda creature comfort available: leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, nav, 360-watt audio, Bluetooth phone connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, moonroof, and 18-inch wheels.
Thus far, most staffers have commented on how the Crosstour barely makes the grade as a buffer, taller, wider Accord sedan. It's only 2.5 inches longer than the Accord and 2.0 inches wider, and rides on nearly the same wheelbase (110.1 inches versus 110.2). That said, it does stand almost eight inches taller, so there's no denying the Crosstour is a crossover. Speaking of crossovers, the Crosstour's full-time 4WD and 8.1 inches of ground clearance make traversing mild, bumpy dirt roads a breeze.
The smooth, light steering allows the biggest Accord ever to navigate tight strip-mall parking lots with ease, though we wouldn't mind a turning circle smaller than 40.2 feet (an Outback's is 36.8, for instance). Power from the 271-horse, 3.5-liter V-6 arrives quickly and smoothly: 0-to-60 takes just 7.3 seconds and the quarter mile 15.6 at 91.1 mph. If you want to tow a small boat or a couple of jet skis, don't set your expectations too high for this mill and chassis; they accommodate only 1500 pounds. Gear changes from the five-speed automatic click away imperceptibly and rev-match on downshift. Over 51 cubic feet of rear cargo room (with back seats folded flat) gobbles up copious gear and goods.
Simply put, when it comes to the Crosstour, check at the door all your preconceived notions of an Accord, especially those bred on Facebook.
