We recently learned of Kia's decision on the Borrego model's fate: Its hiatus is permanent. That's too bad, because our long-termer has served us well over the past 15 months and 37,312 miles.
Associate editor Allyson Harwood and photographer Julia LaPalme used it to prerun a couple of trails north of Santa Barbara for an SUV comparison story. During those days off-road, the Kia performed flawlessly.
As associate Web editor Kirill Ougarov logs, "I'm impressed with how well the Borrego's held up. It has led a fairly hard life here, but everything still works as intended, and there's no tired-sounding creaking or rattling. The design of the interior, however, has not aged well. It wasn't all that fresh when the Borrego made its debut, but it was passable. With Kia releasing the decidedly modern Sorento and Sportage since then, the Borrego's behind-the-times design has really begun to stand out."
