2003 Chevrolet Silverado SS vs. Dodge 1500 SLT vs. Ford Harley-Davidson F-150
For just dumping a hot-rod engine into an existing truck, Dodge has done wonders with its Hemi-ized 1500 Ram. The regular cab has the basics covered (engine, chassis, brakes) to make it a bona-fide sportster. But it's the SRT-10 that should answer all our desires next year: Its lowered stance, Viper power, and awesome good looks will give Ford's SVT Lightning a run for its money. Seemingly, Ford has the right recipe for high-horsepower/great-handling pickups. And while the garish looks of the Harley-Davidson aren't for everyone, it does offer the most detailed and well-executed interior of the three, as well as tire-melting performance. If we had our druthers, we might strip off all the Harley badging, lower it a bit more, and bump the horsepower to Lightning specs. Maybe even a nice flame job on the hood. | Chevrolet Silverado SS | Dodge Ram 1500 | Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 | | TEST DATA | | Acceleration, sec | | 0-40 | 3.19 | 3.38 | 3.14 | | 0-50 | 4.82 | 4.04 | 4.39 | | 0-60 | 6.62 | 6.83 | 5.96 | | 0-70 | 8.63 | 8.83 | 7.70 | | 0-80 | 12.09 | 11.98 | 9.77 | | 0-90 | 15.45 | 15.75 | 12.75 | | 0-100 | 20.22 | 20.85 | 16.16 | | Standing quarter-mile, sec/mph | 14.99/89.05 | 15.12/89.06 | 14.39/96.33 | | | Braking 60-0, ft | 118.95 | 132.03 | 128.59 | | Lateral acceleration, g | 769 | 800 | 795 | | Speed through 600-ft slalom, mph | 61.3 | 62.3 | 60.0 | | EPA fuel economy, city/hwy | 13/17 | 14/18 | 12/16 | | PRICE | | Base price | $39,205 | $21,820 | $36,555 | | Options | $15 | $6130 | $890 | | Price as tested | $40,010 | $27,820 | $38,240 |

I don't like pretentious advertising or promotion. There's enough of it in politics to fill my cup to overflowing without the touchy-feely crowd encroaching on my choice of vehicle. more
