First Drive: 2011 Nissan Titan Crew Cab 4x4 SV

2011 Nissan Titan Side Profile 2
Since we last tested it in 2005, the Nissan Titan has gotten a smidge more powerful, been slightly restyled, and seen its list of standard features grow. Other than that, the full-size rig has remained much the same as it was six years ago. As its sales figures show, that may not be the best tactic in challenging its heavy-hitting rivals from the Detroit Three.

In 2010, Nissan moved 23,426 Titans off dealer lots, up from 19,042 units in 2009, but considerably lower than 2008, when 34,053 were sold. For 2011 the Titan swaps the SE and LE for SV and SL badges, leaving a quartet of trim levels available (S, SV, Pro-4X, SL).

Elaborate option packages can be had at each level, as exemplified by our Radiant Silver SV tester, which checked in with a base price of $33,870. It arrived with three key amenity groups: the $345 Utility Accessory Package (sliding bed extender and underseat storage bin); a $1910 SV Premium Utility Package (10-speaker Rockford Fosgate stereo, power adjustable pedals, XM Radio, spray-on bedliner, Utili-Track channel system with removable cleats, 3.357 final gear, bedside storage compartments, and tow mirrors); and the $1350 SV Value Truck Package (front captain's chairs, rear air vents, a flat-folding front passenger seat, floor-mounted leather shifter, fog lights, and Class IV towing hitch). Nissan says that last package saves buyers $1100 had they purchased the options separately.

Once inside you'll notice a clean, utilitarian space with ample storage capacity and elbow room. The charcoal and black materials aren't pretty, but they feel rugged and easily cleanable. With 10 speakers onboard (including a subwoofer), and the knob turned high enough, jamming to your favorite XM Radio stations turns the Titan into a mobile massage parlor.

A lockable center console capable of swallowing a laptop or small ice chest sits between cushy captain's chairs. We especially liked the storage bins and nets located underneath the Crew Cab's foldable rear bench seats. They proved essential when lugging loose groceries and small items. The same can be said of the lockable, double-sealed bedside storage compartments that held our power tools.

Southern California's rugged streets, with their cavernous potholes, high curbs, and acne-filled highways, served as an appropriate proving ground for the fully boxed F-Alpha platform. With an empty 5-foot, 7-inch bed, the double wishbone front, dual-rate leaf spring rear suspension bounced over bigger obstructions, jarring riders slightly. Compared to the recently tested 2011 Silverado and F Series rigs, the Titan's ride felt skittish and overly responsive to passing imperfections, making us second-guess a few upcoming long-distance trips. Thick A-pillars with their extended tow mirrors hindered some side visibility and made judging the vehicle's width a chore in parking lots.

This truck is absolutely worthless. Its engine is AWFUL!!! 317hp and only 12mpg city? Are you kidding me? Why anyone would pass by any of the competition for this is beyond me. I get that it's not really designed to go head-to-head with the domestics like the Tundra is, but there is no reason for the pathetic fuel economy without impressive power to make up for it.

What amazes me is that Nissan is state-of-the-art in some vehicles, like their Infiniti line, high powered, efficient engines and luxurious interiors offering rare woods; yet, in this vehicle, they are seriously behind the times.  Not only is it underpowered at 317hp when everyone else is much higher, but the technology and style are very dated.  Plus, Truck Trend indicated the base price as $38K.  That's way overpriced for this vehicle.  Their Frontier truck is a better vehicle.  Hopefully, when they redesign the Titan (quickly) it may be a better vehicle.  I don't think the Titan, Tundra, or Honda Ridgeline can compare to the American trios of Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. Sales figures seem to support the U.S. offerings, too.

Too bad the article was so superfluous.  I have a 2006 1500 and titan. I like to tow my 5Klb trailer with the Titan,  it is much better platform.  The back seat is huge, 250lb 6'8" passengers fit very comfortably.

Also the Titan was due a full redesign in 2010. But the agreement feel though when Chrysler had financial problems. Nissan is working a new redesign and us owners are expecting big change including a 3/4 ton an diesel option.

The Titan was way ahead of its time when it came out, other manufacturers are just catching up now.  yea its rated at 317HP, but when measured at the rear wheels its very close to the others, it doesn't loose between the crank and the rear end like the others.  0-60 is the same as most of the others at 7 seconds, its priced high but you can get ten grand off new ones becuase it is a little long and tooth.

i really have loved my 2010 Titan until I had a 2011 F150 park beside me. I started talking to the owner and he loved his new truck especially the hot rod power of the 5.0. I poked my head in and his truck was gorgeous everywhere you looked...like a lot of time, consideration and effort had been invested into it. He looked at mine and it just cemented his decision to buy the Ford. His was a middle of the line model. But based on when I bought mine, Ford wanted about $10k more and Chevy wanted about the same more than the Titan. Just not worth it to me at the time. The Titan has loads of interior space and loads of power. The engine rocks!

I agree its low on in town mpg but it handles nearly at the top...has braking abilities nearly at the top, and being an "outdated" design, wont be subject to any of the first year bugs that the new Fords and Rams will be having (ie, will be more reliable than most in the bunch).  Also i drove from Augusta to Savannah and back on an unbroken in engine and still managed 17.5mpg.

Also the 0-60 acceleration is right in the middle of the pack, and its towing abilities are weaker but still within a few % of the rest.

I got mine with the tracks and removable tie down cleats, towing mirrors, larger battery, spray on bed liner, heated external mirrors, retractable rear window (the largest available), a moon roof, nav, dual 8w power heated memory seats, a rear DVD player, running boards, fog lights, (just to name a few) for around 37k with rebates.

Can any of the others offer such value in a tried and true "bullet proof" drive train thats been on the market and perfected to utter reliability?

No.

Oh and i loved my 5.0 also (the one in my mustang)..that is until it got below 62 degrees and the pos china made MT82 tranny would neither go into 2nd or 3rd gear.

A quick internet search revealed that 30% of mustang owners were experienceing this.

I will never be a beta tester for an American made first year product line ever again (and may go back entirely to foreign after the $10,000 bath i had to take to get rid of that mustang that Ford wouldnt even admit had Mt82 problems on).

Japan makes quality products, China makes parts that are better suited to be boat anchors.

Beware of what you are getting in your "American branded" vehicles..aka.. A chinese transmission that kills the ownership of the entire vehicle!

Yes the Titan is low on HP comparatively but unless you are trying to accelerate at speed above 45-50mph, the lower hp will never be noticed.  From a dig its all about TQ and the titan is still comptetive in the tq department where it really counts.

Drag strip = Ford
Reliable truck = Titan.
