First came the highly anticipated H2 SUV, and now comes the SUT. Looking much like the original concept vehicle shown almost three years ago, the 2005 Hummer H2 SUT still offers all the burly machismo of the original H2, with a few body modifications. In a nutshell, instead of a closed rear storage area with a liftgate like an SUV, there's a choice to be made.
The SUT sports a smallish, open rear-storage well, resembling a miniature pickup bed. By adapting the drop Midgate first seen on the Chevy Avalanche and the roll-down rear window (like the GMC Envoy XUV), the H2 SUT gains a few degrees of versatility and ruggedness few other sport/utility vehicles can match. Where the H2 SUV locks a spare tire inside the cabin, cutting into valuable storage space, the H2 SUT comes with a massive, swing-away spare-tire carrier integrated into the rear bumper. The 70-pound chunk of steel tubing offers an easy-click latch, making opening and closing much easier than you'd expect, especially since the 32-inch-tall full-size spare weighs another 75 pounds. Likewise, the rear bed offers a pickup-type tailgate that drops or completely removes. All SUTs will be equipped with a rear airbag suspension at the beginning of production (previously only an option on H2s), with a rear five-link, coil-spring suspension coming in another six months. The rear bed also offers two lockable storage chests (also similar to the Avalanche) that house a 12-volt outlet and air-compressor fitting to supply added tire pressure or inflation of other air-based toys.
Another feature we especially like is the express-down button on the driver's side. With one touch, all the side and rear windows drop in less than three seconds, instantly connecting you with your surroundings. Open the optional sunroof, and you're practically in a convertible. In addition, with the rear seats folded flat and Midgate dropped, full bed length is just over six feet. Pricing for a base SUT will be about $1000 more than a base SUV, with fully optioned Adventure Series SUTs pushing $55,000. Look for SUTs to be in showrooms by mid-September.
