Reprising its role as the top sport/utility status symbol in 2010 is the Cadillac Escalade. To the delight of Escalade enthusiasts and well-off folks everywhere, the Caddy can once again be had in four different variations: the standard and hybrid models, the extended wheelbase ESV, and the sport/utility truck EXT.
With the exception of the EXT, the Escalade lineup comes available in four trims: Base, Luxury, Premium, and Platinum. The Platinum Edition Escalade represents the pinnacle of Cadillac excellence with the complete package of luxurious interior appointments and an appealing exterior with a shine that lives up to its namesake. On the inside, Nuance leather seating surfaces in ebony or cashmere grace the Escalade's interior, while Aniline leather elevates the classy appearance of the Platinum trim. Much of the interior is powered, heated, and cooled, including the cup holders. New exterior colors for the 2010 Escalade lineup include Black Ice, Celestial Blue, Galaxy Gray, and Silver Lining.
The conventionally powered Escalades continue to employ the all-aluminum 6.2-liter L94 V-8, and this time around, it comes equipped with Active Fuel Management technology for improved fuel efficiency. Mated to the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission, the 403-horspower mill is capable of towing 8300 pounds with rear drive and 8100 pounds with four-wheel drive in its standard body thanks to the V-8's 417 pound-feet of rotational force and a 3.42 rearend. With additional mass to pull, the larger Escalade ESV has a slightly reduced towing maximum of 7600 pounds with rear drive and 7800 pounds with four-wheel drive; the four-wheel-drive-only Escalade EXT can tow 7500 pounds.
Of course, a luxurious ride is incomplete without a suspension that absorbs all the road's bumps and knocks on the way to the opera. The Escalade lineup rides on a short-long arm, coil-over-shock front and coil-sprung five-link rear with Road Sensing Suspension and electronic real-time damping. Magnetic Ride Control with magneto-rheological fluid-filled shocks is implemented in place of the standard Road Sensing Suspension on non-base Escalade models.
Other new features added to the 2010 Escalade include a USB port in the center console, a locking steering column, a now-standard Platinum-model interior clock, front side thorax airbags, a revised parking brake release, and a battery saver mode that shuts off power when the battery gets low due to extended accessory use. The inner door design has also been updated for improved side-impact protection.
With a strong following and an instantly recognizeable design and front grille, the unmistakable Escalade is sure to continue its impressive run for years to come.
Take a standard Escalade shell, throw in the two-mode hybrid system, a flex-fuel-capable 6.0-liter LZ1 V-8, a 3.08 rear axle, and, voila!, you get the Escalade Hybrid. With 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque, it tows just 5800 pounds with rear drive but returns 20 city/21 highway mpg. In four-wheel-drive configuration, the Hybrid tows 5600 pounds and is expected to achieve somewhere in the vicinity of 19 city/19 highway mpg. While the hybrid Escalade looks and delivers similarly to its gas-only brethren, it also conveys the peace of mind regarding fuel economy and emissions output inherently related to hybrid vehicles. The Escalade Hybrid is available in Platinum trim for those looking to combine maximum luxury with green technology.
