Volvo's offering to the growing compact premium utility segment is the 2010 XC60, a CUV with a comprehensive blend of amicable styling, a feature-filled interior, and the abundant safety assets that have become synonymous with the Volvo name. A newcomer within its relatively young division, the XC60 will be throwing its hat into the ring alongside fellow rookies in the Audi Q5, Infiniti EX35, and Mercedes-Benz GLK, which will be competing with stalwart veterans including the Lexus RX and BMW X3.
Launched as the single T6 AWD model back in March, the XC60 originally only came with a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six pushing 281 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. In response to the initial model's 16-city/22-highway fuel-economy ratings, a slightly more economical powerplant was introduced just three months later in the form of a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter straight-six with 235 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. With the base 3.2 model paired with front drive rather than all-wheel drive, fuel economy improved by 2-city and 5-highway mpg to an EPA-estimated 18 city/27 highway. A PZEV-rated 3.2-liter variant puts out slightly less power than its aforementioned ULEV II-rated kin, developing 225 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. All XC60 models are equipped with Volvo's a six-speed "Geartronic" automatic transmission.
The exterior's lines were designed with muscle and grace in mind. The swoopy styling is accentuated with a new trapezoidal front grille and C30-inspired rear tailgate design, while the strong shoulder line blends in with the uniquely shaped LED taillights. Seventeen-inch Segin alloy wheels come standard on the 3.2 model, while 18-inch Mantus alloys are fitted onto the T6 AWD model. Exterior colors include Black Stone, Ice White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Electric Silver Metallic, Maple Red Pearl, Barents Blue Metallic, Silver Metallic, Lime Grass Green Pearl, Savile Gray Pearl, and Terra Bronze Pearl.
With the XC60's strong and graceful styling, the complementary interior finishes the aesthetics of the CUV. The interior features Volvo's signature ultraslim center console panel with a fresh design. Newly designed seats fill the cabin while a new, optional integrated navigation screen, optional panoramic roof, and standard Bluetooth help make the XC60 one of Volvo's best-equipped CUVs yet. The standard audio system has also been upgraded and includes auxiliary and USB ports, and individuals with more-stringent aural demands can opt for the 12-speaker Dynaudio Premium Sound System with Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround and a 650W amplifier. HD Radio comes standard, as does a complimentary six-month subscription to Sirius satellite radio. Interior colors include an array of black and beige surfaces.
Because this is a Volvo, safety is of paramount importance. The industry-first City Safety, which strives to eliminate or mitigate rear-end collisions that occur at 19 mph or below, comes standard on all XC60 models. Hill Descent Control comes standard on the T6 AWD, and is available as an option on the 3.2 model. Even with its compact design, the XC60 is not adverse to light towing duties and offers a 3300-pound towing capacity and Trailer Stability Assist. A thoroughly extensive braking system with ABS, Hydraulic Brake Assist, Optimized Hydraulic Brakes, Ready Alert Brakes, and Fading Brake Support assists the 12.9-inch front and 11.9-inch rear discs, while enhanced Dynamic Stability and Traction Control and the Whiplash Protection Seating System are only the beginning of the safety features.
With a long list of standard features in an attractive package, we will have to wait and see how the XC60 fares for the remainder of the year.
