The 2013 Cadillac SRX is the latest revised new model to debut during the 2012 auto show season with tech-related updates. The big news last year was the availability of the 308-hp 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 replacing both the 3.0-liter and 2.8-liter turbo engines, with no fuel economy penalty over the base engine, and even more horsepower than the turbo, with substantially better fuel economy. But for 2013, the headliner is the availability of the CUE (Cadillac User Experience) system in the SRX, following the announcement of its availability in the XTS full-size sedan and upcoming ATS sport sedan.
The big news with CUE is the potential simultaneous integration of up to 10 devices, ranging from Bluetooth-enabled smartphones, streaming media players, USB, SD card or MP3 players. Cadillac claims the system is flexible and powerful enough to please "simple" and "super" users. The display features proximity sensors, haptic feedback, and a capacitive interface enabling the same swipe, pinch and spread gestures users are familiar with on contemporary smartphones or tablet computers. An added bonus to CUE is standard HD Radio.
Although CUE is the biggest news for the SRX for 2013, there are other detail changes to distinguish it from its immediate predecessor. Along with CUE, the touch screen moves from its semi-hidden, vertically motorized position on the dash to a more central location. The screen is still motorized, but this time revealing a storage space beneath the flat-screen interface that includes a USB interface for media players or smartphones.
Other interior changes include a new steering wheel, shift knob and gauge cluster design. A new Light Titanium color scheme is added, with available Raven Sapele wood color accents. Following its humbler cousins, the four-cylinder Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, the 2013 SRX adds active noise cancellation for a quieter interior.
Also new for 2013 are a side blind zone alert system as standard, and an optional radar-based adaptive cruise control system.
To distinguish the 2013 model from the 2012, the new SRX features front fender vents illuminated by LED light pipes, and new 20-inch wheel designs.
Although many jaded auto-journos were disappointed with the SRX's transition from the rear-wheel drive Sigma chassis shared with the STS to the humbler front-drive Theta architecture in 2010, there's no arguing with the sales results, as consumers have shown more fondness for the conventional crossover packaging of the new model. The powertrain upgrade in 2012, followed by the addition of CUE in 2013, promise Cadillac continued sales success in the premium crossover segment.
