"Sleepers" are somewhat of a rarity in today's aftermarket comprised mostly of huge spoilers and even bigger wheels. But from the small town of Wettstetten, Germany, automotive equivalents of wolves in sheep's clothing are produced carefully and methodically more often than not. From the unofficial land of bespoke tuners comes one of the maddest Audi's around called the RS6 R by famed VAG modifier MTM.

Now, transforming what is already a formidable Autobahn eater into something even more terrorizing is a feat not dared undertaken by just any regular parts builder. That's when MTM's racing and Audi Quattro expertise comes into the equation of advanced product development. In run-of-the-mill form, the Audi RS6 employs a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-10 making an impressive 580 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. But as with all of their builds, MTM aimed for more in every performance category. Engineers on the RS6 R project first looked to tweak V-10's computer element. After a remapping of the stock ECU system, MTM's initial step towards creating the ultimate grocery-getter produced 656 horsepower and a staggering 578 lb-ft of torque - better include a trip to the tire store on that grocery run.

While many builders would be quite satisfied with horsepower that bests the Lamborghini LP640, MTM took their RS6 R step further with their advanced stage of modification. Fine tuning of the program has yet to conclude, but so far, engineers have added a free-flowing stainless steel exhaust, ECU reflash and a reworked air intake system to the package. The end result: a Veyron-approaching 702 horsepower capable of propelling the car to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.9 seconds. MTM can set up the car to easily hit 192 mph should a customer desire the ride of their life. Keeping the power in check up front are available 15.9-inch six-piston grooved brakes sitting behind 21-inch forged Bimoto wheels.

Exterior treatments are subtle but effective, with aerodynamics that include a carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser. A more aggressive stance thanks to adjustable coilovers not only lowers the car, but also increases traction significantly.

The MTM RS6 R package complete with suspension, engine mods, and styling bits can be had by the discerning "sleeper" buyer at a starting price of around 15,500 euros ($24,000) -- of course that price excludes the cost of a requisite donor Audi RS6.
