Each year, the lines that divide vehicle categories get blurrier, making the "Best in Class" story that much more difficult to put together. It's hard enough to pick winners for each category; factor in determing the categories themselves, and it's exponentially harder! We also strive to make sure the comparisons within each category are as fair as possible.

It seems people still value authenticity, as the Jeep Wrangler, arguably the most authentic SUV on the market, maintains a strong following in the U.S. and around the world. The popularity of Jeep's enduring icon worldwide has kept the Toledo factory humming. The plant celebrated the milestone of the millionth Wrangler JK produced at the plant last Friday, with Chrysler's vice president of assembly operations, Mauro Pino, and Dan Henneman, Jeep unit chairman of UAW Local 12, drove a black 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition off the assembly line.

Things are not always what they appear at first glance. A case in point is the 2014 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado. As a recent photo taken by our own Allyson Harwood shows, the new pickups are visually much more massive than their predecessors. But they are also considerably sleeker. General Motors' new full-size trucks underwent more aerodynamic testing than any truck to date, and the trucks' efficient aerodynamics are one of the key reasons the trucks are able to claim best-in-class V-8 fuel economy, still equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions, just as some of its competitors are starting to use eight-speeds.

AEM's cold-air intake system expands to include 2009-2013 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 1500 trucks with 4.8-, 5.3-, and 6.2-liter engines. The airbox is designed to pull cool air into the engine with claimed gains of up to 10 hp and 10 lb-ft of torque over stock. The system consists of a rotational molded plastic airbox and molded high-density polyethylene air intake tube with a washable and reusable 5-inch oval, high-performance dry flow air filter. MSRP: $529.

The 2014 Subaru Outback, the model that has long straddled the boundary between wagon and SUV, gets minor trim and packaging updates for the 2014 model year. Pricing is largely unchanged from the 2013 model, but some trim levels have revised equipment content which results in a slight price increase.

Chrysler is reportedly working on an ultra-high-performance supercharged variant of the Hemi V-8, dubbed the Hellcat by insiders. The 6.2-liter supercharged engine will reportedly be used in the next-generation Dodge Challenger and could go into other vehicles that currently use the 6.4-liter naturally aspirated Hemi engine. It's unknown whether this engine will be sold in addition to, or replace the 6.4 Hemi.

The concept of a F-150 SVT Raptor-based SUV has been around for more than two years, with Hennessey showing conceptual renderings of the VelociRaptor SUV in September 2010. But now, the monster SUV has jumped off the CAD screen and into reality.

For this installment of Styling Showdown, we bring you a vehicle that, according to rumors and reports, wasn't supposed to exist. Over the last year or two, the prevailing wisdom, at least according to the automotive rumor mill, was that the Dodge Durango would be phased out, making room for a revived Jeep Grand Wagoneer. With that supposedly reliable knowledge, we wrote off the Durango as a solid, dynamically engaging, but ultimately short-lived three-row SUV that provided an interesting counterpoint in market generally characterized by anonymous, me-too entries.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Texas Edition celebrates the connection between the Lone Star state and full-size pickups. In fact, Chevrolet says one in six full-size pickup trucks is sold in Texas.

In what's been a long, drawn-out battle between off-road enthusiasts, the U.S. Marines, and the Bureau of Land Management, it looks as though a final, permanent compromise that will keep the Johnson Valley OHV Recreational Area open for use for more than 300 days a year is about to become reality. The U.S. House Natural Resources Committee approved HR 1676, the Johnson Valley National Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area Establishment Act that would give joint use and access to both Marines at the nearby Twentynine Palms base, as well as off-road enthusiasts that have enjoyed the area for years.

Automotive media and consumer reviews of Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 have been generally favorable, praising its robust torque output and powerful acceleration in Ford's cars and trucks. But for a few Ford owners in Ohio, the ownership and driving experience has not been quite as superlative. Three plaintiffs have filed suit against Ford for allegedly failing to disclose to consumers known design and engineering issues that can cause driveability issues with the engine, Automotive News reports.

Some premium brands have said they're not interested in chasing volume at all costs, but most seem like they are, and Nissan's Infiniti premium brand is among them. Infiniti brand president Johan DeNysschen has set an ambitious global sales target of 600,000 units by 2020, according to Automotive News. The brand sold 170,000 models worldwide in 2012. Key to that growth is expansion in China and Europe, where the Infiniti brand is a relative newcomer.

Subaru is recalling 2013 model Outback and Legacy vehicles built from February 15, 2012, through June 15, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the inner and outer shafts of the steering column assembly may become disengaged from one another.

Resale values on 3-year-old full-size trucks are leading the overall industry with year-over-year auction price average gains of as much as 8 percent, and an overall segment average gain of nearly 7 percent, according to the National Dealer Association's May edition of Guidelines. This news comes even as trade-in values on some of the most popular passenger car models has dropped an average of almost 10 percent, including the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima.

But Chrysler's truck brand's support of farmers and the FFA Organization (formerly Future Farmers of America) is going well beyond a one-time commercial tribute.

In a sign of its commitment to emerging markets, Ford has doubled-down on its investment in the Ford Sollers plant in Elabuga, Tatarstan, announcing an investment of $274 million in the building of a new engine plant, as well as adding production of the Ford EcoSport B-segment SUV at Elabuga. This comes just a month after local production of the Explorer was announced for the plant.

Since the introduction of the Ford Transit Connect to the U.S. market in 2008, it has enjoyed a virtual monopoly in the small commercial van segment in the U.S. Nissan just announced the NV200 for the U.S. and Ram is reportedly readying a new small van based on the Fiat Doblo. Now Ford has another marketplace competitor on the horizon in the form of the 2015 Chevrolet City Express, which, if it looks vaguely familiar to you, it should. It's essentially a rebadged Nissan NV200.

We've all seen the mouth-watering off-road hardware to come from Icon over the past few years. Jonathan Ward's numerous variations on the timeless Toyota FJ40 to impeccably reimagined classic Ford Broncos, are the stuff of off-road dreams. But this latest creation just might be our favorite. Icon's FJ44 is a four-door, four-seater variation on Toyota's classic.

For many years, imports have held a decisive edge over the domestic brands in terms of perceived or actual quality, taking top honors in surveys such as the J.D. Powers customer satisfaction index, and the Strategic Vision Total Quality rankings. But the 2013 survey showed a marked improvement in ranking and customer perception for the domestic brands. For the first time in more than 10 years, there were more domestic models than imports represented on the Strategic Vision list.

Hellwig's new Big Wig series of rear anti-roll bars increases cornering traction, handling, and stability for heavy-duty trucks with a high center of gravity. The bars are made of 1-5/6-inch-diameter chromoly steel, and they come with heavy-gauge mounting hardware and polyurethane bushings that improve handling. Applications are available for Ford F-Series Super Duty, Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra HD, and Ram Heavy Duty. MSRP: $473.

The Ford Atlas concept truck, one of the show-stealers at the 2013 Detroit auto show, recently made its way to Southern California, first stopping in Irvine, just south of Los Angeles, for an encore appearance at the Saturday morning Cars and Coffee gathering. Shortly thereafter it visited the Motor Trend studios as the subject of a roundtable interview with Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh, Truck Trend's Allyson Harwood, Four Wheeler's John Cappa, and MT's Jonny Lieberman. Representing the Blue Oval was none other than Ford Trucks marketing manager Doug Scott.

The Ford Super Duty has a generally well-deserved reputation for toughness and the ability to handle heavy loads. But it appears there could be a potential weak spot on some 2008 F-250 and F-350 models. The National Highway Traffic Safety administration has received five reports of steering loss on the models, with two causing the vehicles to go off the road and one resulting in a car-to-car collision.

Chrysler is conducting a massive worldwide recall of more than 400,000 2005-2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander models to correct an issue with the transmission circuit boards that could allow inadvertent shifts to neutral. The company will reprogram the software to prevent the issue going forward.
