The Subaru Outback is uniquely tailored for the tastes of the U.S. market. In most other markets in the world, it’s sold as the Legacy wagon. But as Americans seem to generally have an instinctive revulsion toward anything with the “w” word attached, Subaru has skillfully marketed the Outback as a crossover and has been rewarded handsomely with sales that are second only to the perennially popular Forester. The upside to this is that the Outback has a remarkably car-like ride, because that’s essentially what it is. The 2015 model got a bumper-to-bumper redesign that provided evolutionary styling updates inside and out, added tech and safety features, and, like it or not, mandatory CVT transmissions across the board. Available engines are the economical 2.5L boxer H-4, or a more powerful 3.6L flat-six. Like the Forester, the Outback is available with Subaru’s EyeSight safety system. If you’re looking for a rugged, economical, practical family vehicle, the Outback is worth consideration.
