2017 Pickup Truck of the Year Day Three #PTOTY17

Feeling Fuelish

Day Three of Truck Trend's 2017 Pickup Truck of the Year consisted of the fuel economy portion of the test. The route started in Fontana, California, northeast of Los Angeles, and headed to the outskirts of Las Vegas, Nevada, a round trip of nearly 450 miles, and a good opportunity to judge the highway fuel economy of the trucks. To limit potential variables, drivers were instructed to follow posted speed limits, and use cruise control. Although final fuel economy figures will not be calculated until later in the week, the preliminary results based on indicated miles per gallon were eye-opening.

The most powerful trucks were not necessarily the thirstiest, nor were the heaviest. In fact, the largest, heaviest trucks returned a highway average of more than 20 mpg highway for most of the journey. The fact that the two largest trucks were diesels was likely a factory in their surprising fuel-efficiency. On a related note, the trucks with the most torque were the most relaxed highway cruisers, able to stay in top gear even going up grades, whereas the trucks with lower torque output often had to kick down a gear or two to keep pace.
Day four and five consist of the off-road portion of the test, and will be the theater where some of the trucks shine, and others struggle. Which one truck will prevail as the overall winner? Stay tuned to TruckTrend.com, and be sure to follow our coverage of the 2017 Pickup Truck of the Year test all week!
