Truck Trend’s 2018 Pickup Truck of the Year: Day 3 – Fuel Economy Loop #PTOTY18
Hitting the Road in Search of High MPG and a Perfect Photo
After two long, hot days in the sun testing our 2018 Pickup Truck of the Year competitors, we were looking forward to getting some quiet, comfortable seat time on Day 3 of #PTOTY18. Fortunately, our fuel economy drive gave us just that opportunity.
We met in the morning, washed the road grime off each truck, made sure the fuel tanks were full, and hit the open road! Our goal? Realistic fuel economy numbers, along with a chance to experience each truck for several hours to get a feel for its highway ride, long-distance comfort, and luxury and convenience features. Plus, our wandering route would take us up the Pacific Coast Highway on our way to Pismo Beach, where some excellent Mexican food and scenic vistas would await. This was a good day.
As with last year’s fuel economy run, each truck would cycle through each driver. Every 100 miles, the trucks would move down the line, ensuring each had a chance to be the lead vehicle (therefore helping normalize our economy numbers for wind resistance and our individual driving styles). While we won’t give away too many secrets just yet, the mileage test had some surprising results; our biggest trucks made good use of their diesel engines to achieve impressive numbers. We’re still crunching the numbers, so stay tuned for our winners soon.
And be sure to come back tomorrow, because we're going off-roading!
