Long Term Update 5: 2009 Kia Borrego

Sleeper of a Super Deal

Senior editor Ron Kiino spent a long weekend in the Borrego and found its size, versatility, and power especially commendable. "I took my wife and son up to Solvang in the long-term Kia and was quickly reminded how much I like the Borrego's size. Smaller than a Chevy Tahoe but bigger than a Toyota 4Runner, the Borrego is relatively easy to maneuver through parking lots and tight streets, especially with its impressive 36.5-foot turning circle (the Tahoe's is 39.0, the 4Runner's 37.4). Inside, it offers great room in the first two rows, decent space in the third, and a ton of cargo volume with the third row folded flat. I managed to fit three duffel bags, a stroller, a Pack 'n Play portable crib, an ice chest, and still had plenty of room to spare.

"During my three-day stint with the Kia, in which I amassed about 300 miles, I didn't find a whole lot to criticize. Besides a busy, trucklike ride that generally absorbs bumps with an unwelcome harshness, the Borrego offers ample power from the 337-horse Tau V-8, seamless shifts from the ZF six-speed automatic, excellent ergonomics (the audio and HVAC controls are very easy to use), communicative steering, and a robust A/C system that quickly cooled the cabin in 90-degree heat. If I were looking for a smoking-hot deal on a three-row sport/ute with V-8 power and solid reliability (zero problems thus far with this long-termer), I would happily consider the Borrego. Plus, given its slumping sales (just 2886 through May compared to 29,881 for Tahoe and 18,527 for 4Runner), the Borrego is quite the exclusive rig."
