2013 Honda Accord Sport Long-Term Update 3

Grippy, Sporty, and Entertaining

During a recent track-test visit to Los Angeles, MT's resident racer Randy Pobst borrowed the Accord Sport for a week and came away mostly impressed. "Nice car," he noted. "The 'Sport' really means something. Not boring as expected. Suspension was big surprise: firm and balanced, and still rides OK. I took twisty Angeles Crest over to Palmdale -- steering was a bit numb, but great grip. The little four-cylinder was willing -- not fast and noisy at full throttle, but a silent cruiser and saw 31.5 mpg to Las Vegas."
The "great grip" Randy was referring to came from the Tire Rack-sourced Enkei Raijin 8x18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/45 Pirelli P Zero Nero GT summer tires. At 45 pounds per corner, the Enkei-Pirelli combo dropped unsprung weight by 9 pounds compared to the same-size stock pairing, which featured Michelin Primacy MXM4 all-season rubber. At the test track, the lighter rolling stock dropped 60-0 braking down to a scant 109 feet, a notable improvement compared to the OE setup's 129 feet. That said, max lateral acceleration for the Pirellis came in at 0.87 g, just a smidge behind the Michelins' 0.88 g.

With just over 18,000 miles on the odometer, I took the Accord to Honda of Thousand Oaks for its second maintenance visit, a "B1" service. Translation: a 0W-20 full-synthetic oil change, tire rotation, and complete inspection, all for $123.04. Thus far I've had to shell out $209.42 for two maintenance visits – not bad at all, considering the car is approaching 20,000 miles of service.
Speaking of miles of service, thus far the Accord Sport has returned an impressive 28.6 mpg. I routinely see in the 27-29 mpg range on my 45-mile commute, which consists of a mix of canyon roads, coastal highway, and freeway. During its stay here, the Honda's best tank average was 36.2 mpg, while its worst was 21.5. In our proprietary IntelliChoice Real MPG testing, the Sport returned 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined – right in line with what we've seen thus far. Similarly, the EPA numbers of 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined are in line as well, though the city and highway figures seem a bit optimistic. That said, the discrepancy in the Sport's Real MPG versus EPA numbers aren't bad and not nearly as surprising as what we've seen from a Mazda6 GT automatic (Real MPG: 22/34/26; EPA: 26/38/30).
