2015 Volvo V60 T5 Drive-E Long-Term Arrival
This marks the third Volvo long-term test car we've had in recent years. The first two, a 2012 S60 T6 hot rod and a quick 2013 turbo five-cylinder model, both featured all-wheel drive and were praised for their comfort, styling, and performance. So when we got the chance to get our hands on one of the new, super-cool V60 wagons, we went another direction.
Front-wheel drive. Four-cylinder. Station wagon. Words that don't normally inspire enthusiasm. Well, you would be wrong. Our Powder Blue Metallic V60 T5 Drive-E is quite the stunner. Powered by a direct-injected, 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 240 hp and 258 lb-ft, it's not a slouch, either. The engine even has an overboost feature that increases torque to 280 lb-ft for the first 10 seconds of full throttle in gears two through eight. That's still mild compared with our original 3.0-liter, turbo six-cylinder-powered long-term S60, which made 325 hp and 355 lb-ft after its Polestar reflash. But our spunky little 2.0-liter is decently quick.
Any advantage the old Swedish hot rod had over my wagon will quickly go to waste as I pass it, laughing, at the pump. What is the old saying, "There is no replacement for displacement?" Yep, my tiny little 2.0-liter has size on its side and furthers the cause using a new standard eight-speed transmission and engine start/stop to gain a healthy leg up on the bigger engine. With an EPA-rated 25/37 mpg city/highway, my trips to the pump should be few and far between.
We didn't exactly skimp on the options. With $9400 in features, our wagon is loaded. We picked the Platinum package, the Sport package, and the Technology package and added a dash of BLIS! No, not bliss, although there is plenty of that with this wagon. We opted for the Blind Spot Information package (BLIS). There are too many luxury, sport, and cool things in these packages to list here. But don't worry, we have an entire year to talk about this Swede wagon and make all sorts of Swede puns! It's going to be great! (You thought I was going to say Swede, didn't you?)
