Taking It for Granted
Taking something for granted is generally considered a negative behavior, but in rare cases, I believe it can be construed as a compliment. A backhanded one, maybe, but a compliment nonetheless.
I realized recently how comfortable I'd become with the Vsport, and how little I appreciated what a good car it is on my daily commute. This epiphany was spurred by separation – absence makes the heart grow fonder, I suppose. I've recently been breaking in a new long-term car that has none of the Cadillac's creature comforts, though it is quite sporty.
Climbing back into the Vsport after a week, I was surprised how at home I felt. The seat is a lounge chair compared to the other car's, the interior is much quieter, and the controls are instantly familiar. What's more, while gaining immeasurably in ride quality, I've given up little in handling and sportiness. It's nearly as quick to boot, with a fantastic mid-range pull. Remember, this car hits 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and pulls 0.96 g average on the skidpad. That's almost as quick as a 911 Carrera in a straight line and as an R8 V-8 on the skidpad. From a luxury sedan.
I'm reminded of how much I enjoy driving this car just by passing slow-moving traffic. The steering is quick and communicative, the chassis incredibly responsive, the transmission always in the game, and the power unimpeachable. I can pick a hole, squeeze the throttle, turn the wheel, and the Vsport responds exactly the way I want. And yet it's also a quiet, luxurious sedan that's perfectly content to loaf along in traffic with no objection. It's a great road trip car.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the Vsport is that there's no hard conversion from luxury sedan to sport sedan. It's not a paintbrush one minute and a hammer the next. Push it harder, dial up the sport modes, ask more of it, and it responds like an athlete who has been waiting patiently for the big pass and can finally spring into action. Its muscles tighten, its concentration deepens, and everything begins to happen faster, with controlled, graceful speed and reactions, not wild flailings.
It says a lot, to me, about the Vsport that it can make such an impression simply by changing lanes to pass a Prius on my in-city commute. Plenty of cars can impress on the back roads and racetracks of the world. Few do it every time you get behind the wheel, and this Cadillac is one of them. Not because it's the fastest or sportiest sedan of all time, but because it passes so seamlessly through states of being, from luxury car to sport sedan and back without a hint of protest or incivility. All sedans should be this good to drive, both on the track and in traffic.
