2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI Long-Term Arrival

Our 2015 COTY Begins a Year-Long Stay

There's no question we're fans of Volkswagen's new 2015 Golf. After all, the Golf TSI won a compact hatchback Big Test shootout, undoing our previous segment fave, the Mazda3, in the process. It followed up that battle victory by also winning the war: The Golf is our 2015 Car of the Year. As is the case every year, that award goes to an entire model range, not a specific trim level, and the Golf's model range is larger than many others. With five different powertrains, five transmissions, three- and five-door configurations, and a wagon to come, the available permutations are exhausting.

But even with several variants available, we didn't hesitate too much in choosing a GTI for our long-termer. Virtually all of us on staff like a small, sporty car, and the GTI tugs at our heartstrings the strongest.
Picking a GTI was the easy part. Optioning it was a little trickier. Tartan cloth seats or leather? Manual or DSG? Three doors or five? Wanting to sample as much tech as the car has to offer, we went for a five-door, DSG-equipped Autobahn package car in Tornado Red. With that top-spec trim, we get heated leather sport seats, navigation, a Fender audio system, a sunroof, keyless access, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and dual-zone climate control. On top of that, we snapped up both the Driver Assistance package (park distance control and forward collision warning) and the Lighting package (adaptive bi-xenon headlights). All told, the total on the Monroney was $33,205 for a compact car with enough options to rival an S-Class from not that long ago. Here's to progress.
