2014 Volkswagen Passat Sport Long-Term Update 4

Will It Ikea? Why Yes, It Will

From day trips with my 4-year-old niece I know the Passat easily transports a kid in a car seat. And it's our go-to ride for production pod lunches because the back seat fits three adults comfortably, if the third adult is petite. Motor Trend's resident Tall Guy, the 6-foot-4 Zach Gale, enjoys a good 8 inches of knee room when I'm in the driver's seat and he's sitting behind me.

But could I cram an unassembled, boxed couch from Ikea into the back seat? The box for the Solsta, the smallest couch Ikea sells, is 47 1/4 inches long, 32 5/8 inches wide, and 19 5/8 inches tall, and my measuring tape calculations indicated that it wouldn't cram into the trunk but would fit in the back seat. And it would've, except I couldn't navigate the box past the lower curve and lip of the door and onto the seat. But there I was in the Ikea parking lot, and I had to get the thing home. My sister drives a 2014 Audi A4 -- basically the same width (71.9 inches versus 72.2) as the Passat, with similar doors -- so swapping cars wouldn't have made a difference. Out came the box cutter. Unboxed, the arm sides and bottom pieces fit into the trunk, and the center part with the foldout mattress easily slid into the back seat. It was a pain to get the whole thing up to my apartment, which is two floors above the parking garage, but I got it done in five sweaty trips all by myself.

Speaking of the trunk, the Passat came with a CarGo Protection System that retails for $24 for a set of eight heavy-duty plastic blocks at the VW Parts & Accessories eStore. (When I Googled, they popped up as a 2013 Beetle accessory.) The blocks are 7 1/4 inches long at the base, 3 3/4 inches tall, and an inch wide. They've got a Velcro-like pattern on the bottom that sticks them to the trunk liner, and they're meant to keep your cargo from sliding around. If the cargo isn't tall -- for example, a case of LaCroix sparkling water, laid on its side -- the blocks will keep it from sliding around. But tall, top-heavy grocery bags or gallon jugs of water will tip right over. There also are four heavy-duty car mats in the trunk, but since there isn't any heavy-duty weather in SoCal and I haven't gone camping, I haven't used them.
