2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Long-Term Update 5

William Walker
Mar 30, 2015
Hopefully the third time is the charm. It seems like every few months our 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk needs to have its nine-speed transmission re-flashed. The first update was talked about way back in February, when Rory Jurnecka reported improvements after the transmission programming was updated at the 10,000-mile service.
The second update came a month ago when photo editor Julia LaPalme was momentarily stranded when the Jeep failed to shift into gear after exiting a freeway. While driving back from a photo shoot, the car began to make odd noises and the check engine light came on, and she exited the freeway. After a few frustrating moments trying to shift into drive, she finally had to shut off and restart the vehicle in order to break the Jeep of its glitch, but it continued to make odd noises from the transmission. After carefully driving the Jeep to our local dealership, the fix came in the way of another transmission re-flash because the transmission, in Jeep’s words, had “lost communication with the ECU.” The problem was remedied, and they had us back on the road in a few hours.
And that brings us to the current update. As reported by us at the beginning of February, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was preparing yet another update for the nine-speed. Hopefully this time they will get it right.
