Ford’s all-new 2015 F-150 pickup was given the top award and named the “Truck of Texas”, at the Texas Auto Writer Association’s (TAWA) 2014 Texas Truck Rodeo. Ford’s best-selling truck group was also tapped as the “Truck Line of Texas”; Ford took home three other additional awards.
“TAWA members represent the voice of truck buyers in Texas, America’s largest truck market,” said Mike Marrs, president of TAWA. “After exhaustively testing 75 vehicles from 18 brands, the all-new Ford F-150 is our clear choice for Truck of Texas.”
Doug Scott, marketing manager of Ford’s truck group, said, “This is a significant honor, one of the three big ones along with the Motor Trend and North American Truck of the Year awards. Our entire truck team is proud and honored to win the Truck of Texas trophy.”
Eighteen automotive brands participated in this year’s TAWA event held at the Knibbe Ranch, in Spring Branch, Texas. The annual event was a record breaker on several accounts including the number of people registered to attend at 168 and a record number of voting automotive journalists registered at 60, who hail from the Lone Star State, as well as from throughout the U.S.; they are vetted members of TAWA’s professional media group. There were also a record 75 vehicles registered for the 18 award categories. The Truck Rodeo’s Title Sponsor was the Steel Market Development Institute, while the Hospitality Sponsor was XPEL Protective Coatings.
The Texas Hill Country climate was hot during the 21st annual two-day event held at this historic ranch and the competition was hotly contested as Ford, Ram, Chevrolet, GMC, Toyota, and Nissan entered pickups in categories that awarded first, second and third-place winners in Full-Size Pickup, Mid-Size Pickup, Luxury Pickup, Heavy Duty Pickup, Off Road Pickup, as well as the two most prestigious awards given to truck makers: Truck of Texas and Truck Line of Texas.

“Just like the largest truck market in the country, the Texas Truck Rodeo continues to grow,” said Michael Marrs, TAWA’s President. “This year, there were a record number of participants and vehicles to evaluate, making the job of TAWA journalist just that much tougher.”
Winning the Compact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) title was the 2015 Honda CR-V Touring; the 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium was named the Mid-size CUV; the 2015 Kia Sedona SX was named Full-size CUV; and the 2015 Lincoln MKC was named Luxury CUV.
Stephane Cesareo, Lincoln Global Communications Manager, said, “It’s been a long time since Lincoln participated in the TAWA Truck Rodeo and we will definitely keep coming back. I had never been to Texas and have really enjoyed meeting the friendly members of TAWA and seeing some of the Hill Country of Texas.”
The 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk was named Compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV); the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 was named Mid-size SUV; the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD was named Full-size SUV; and the 2015 Range Rover Evoque 5-Door was named Compact Luxury SUV.
"We are extremely delighted and proud that for the fifth consecutive year, the respected and influential Texas auto writers have named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the SUV of Texas," said Mike Manley, president and CEO of Chrysler Group’s Jeep Brand.
The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit EcoDiesel 4x4 was named Mid-size Luxury SUV; and the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali was named Full-size Luxury SUV. The 2015 Jeep Wrangler was named Off-road SUV.

The Mid-size Pickup Truck title was won by the 2015 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab, and the Full-size Pickup Truck was the 2015 Ford F-150 King Ranch. The Luxury Pickup Truck was the 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum; and the Heavy Duty Pickup Truck was the 2015 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn. The Off-road Pickup Truck was the 2015 Ram Power Wagon.
The Commercial Vehicle was the 2015 Ford Transit 250. Other winners in the competition included Best Connectivity, won by Chrysler Group’s Uconnect Access; Best Powertrain, given to Chrysler’s Eco Diesel Engine; and Best Technology, awared to the 2015 Ford F-150 King Ranch high-strength military-grade aluminum body.
Texas boasts the largest pickup market in the U.S. and worldwide; as a result, every truck brand covets the awards garnered at this two-day-long shoot-out. In fact, new special-edition models are built specifically for Texas buyers, and an ever-growing number of manufacturers, their truck teams and their new models show up for this annual rite of passage, where pickups and SUVs go head-to-head over rugged and rough terrain that includes rock climbs, water crossings, a variety of off-road ranch track and paved roads. Judging occurs over two full days of rigorous vehicle comparison, evaluating features that range from interior and exterior styling to off-road capability and the entrant’s overall utility, value and fuel efficiency.
“TAWA members are among the first to experience the all-new F-150’s breakthrough innovations and best-in-class capabilities, features that will help our hardworking customers improve their productivity,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, The Americas. “It is an honor to again be named the Truck of Texas. We are committed to continuously improving America’s favorite trucks.” The Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) was founded in 1987 with a mission to promote quality and accuracy in automotive journalism and disseminate information about the industry through news related print, online and broadcast media.
