NASCAR hands out stiff penalties to Gibbs Racing

Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - NASCAR came down hard on Joe Gibbs Racing Wednesday for cheating during Saturday's Nationwide Series race.

Drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano were each stripped of 150 championship points and placed on probation for the remainder of the year. Crew chiefs Dave Rogers of the No.20 team and Jason Ratcliff of the No.18 have been fined $50,000 each and placed on indefinite suspension from NASCAR.

Five other crew members from JGR were also suspended indefinitely. They include: car chief Dorian Thorsen, engine tuner Michael Johnson and crew member Toby Bigelow from the 18, and car chief Richard Bray and engine tuner Dan Bajek from the 20.

Stewart finished third in the No.20, while Logano came in seventh in the No.18 in Saturday's race at the Michigan International Speedway. During post- race inspection, officials found a magnetic spacer under the gas pedals of both cars with the attempt of compromising the chassis dynamometer test.

Team owner Joe Gibbs was penalized 150 points for each car.

Gibbs has apologized for the incident.

"We want to apologize to NASCAR, all of our partners, all of our families at JGR, and all of our fans for the unfortunate incident that took place this past weekend in Michigan with our two Nationwide teams," Gibbs said in a team statement. "A poor decision was made by some key members of our organization, and 100 percent of the blame rests with us."

Gibbs has also accepted NASCAR's penalty and plans to take further actions on all individuals involved.

"We take full responsibility and accept the penalties NASCAR has levied against us today," Gibbs said. "We had come to the conclusion that we would add to any NASCAR imposed penalties with the minimum being suspension for the remainder of the season for those involved, including our two Nationwide Series crew chiefs. There will also be an additional monetary fine beyond the amount announced by NASCAR earlier today, which will be the responsibility of those involved."

Both teams have been placed on probation for the remainder of the year.

The JGR No.18 and No.20 Toyotas have a combined 14 wins in 25 Nationwide races this year.
